Being new to this board maybe I am too paranoid but I am afraid to post anything too specific about any research I do. For one thing I don't want to tip anyone in my area that these records and sources exist. I still see numerous people hunting the classics like schoolyard and fairgrounds so I know there is a lot of competition in my area. Even doing what I consider very deep research I have only found one truly virgin area. Which makes me wonder all the more whether its better to share resources in hopes of gaining an equal share of knowledge from others. How does everyone here handle that? Also, how often do you find unhunted virgin territories.

Hey Lime: Think I would keep any research info to my self...if you do the work you should reap the benefits.. I do also do the school yards , tot lots , beaches .. There are some places if I was to go with some one from my area I would not be taking them along, unless for safety reasons then I would.. Enjoy your self have a good time in this hobby..

Keep your cards close to the vest - so to speak. Your hard work should NOT become a lazy persons reward. A guy I know shared some research info and the next thing you know, some guy cleaned his site out. As for virgin sites - very rare. To get those you REALLY have to think outside the box, and I'm not talking research with plat maps . . .

Have you ever read the book Detecting "hunted out" sites? If not, you should check it out. It's very informative providing techniques to pull those last few coins out of pounded sites. I'm at hunted out sites every weekend and still come home with some cool stuff. No one gets it all . . .

The competition is so great now days I would be careful how much info I put out. I will say things like, a school yard , an old church, etc, but not say where. A little information makes the post a lot more interesting. Monty

It's not paranoia, it's being smart. Avoid specifics. Remember that "deep research" for many means reading the posts on this forum.

I post pictures, I post finds, I post all kinds of stuff... but never "where" I hunt or any reasearch necessarily.

It's your spot, keep it to yourself if you want to.

And welcome to treasurenet!

Hi Lime...

I'm with the other members on this topic.

I've had the unhappy experiences of sharing research and locations only to have those areas cleaned out as far as that is possible. I am not one to complain either, but such people don't get invited again.

Keep your own counsel, especially when you do all the research work.

Jim.

Lime, If one counts me, that makes it unanimous! Never tell about the location of your sites, and if you find something of immense value, tell no one!! You might be surprised by what our system calls fair!! Great post! Regards, Richard P.S., Hope you make some truly great finds on your site!!

I will hook up with someone now and then and hunt together. If they take me to their site, as I did when I went to Georgia, I found a lot of CW stuff. I was told by the person I hooked up with that I was welcome back anytime, with or without him. I have always asked permission to hunt someone elses site. But one thing to keep in mind, is you don't know who has honor and who doesn't...so probably keep your secret places and share only the ones you want to share.

Keep it to yourself..I have a member here that hunted with me a few weeks back and he gave me some maps and stuff he was working on....all I can say is he better be gald he didn't do that with one of the guys that would be on the site the next day without him.

I will not go on the spot unless he wants to go. I've been burnt before and it didn't feel to good so I refuse to do it to someone else but there are people out there , you'll find out if you stay at it long enough who will be all buddy buddy just to sucker you for your spots.

hate to put it that way but it's true. don't let the few like that shy you away from the many of down right good folks that truely injoy getting out and hunting..and there are plenty of good folks on this site I've found over the short time I've been here. just be aware of the shady ones. just my two cents for whats its worth

Only when I Get Skunked ;D :-[ ;D

I'm with Monty on this one, I'll tell you what the place was, but for the most part I keep the location to myself.
I've got one hunt buddy I'll tell him all my places, because he is an honorable Md'er
as far as finding virgin sites, I spend hours just driving country roads looking for probable hunt sites, then more time at the courthouse checking ownership, then more time driving to owners homes to talk to them and ask for permission.
I've found that a person, will likely say yes, if you take the time to talk to them and show them who you are rather than a phone call

What Sniffer said

Sometimes I feel like sharing... when I'm finding stuff.

Sometimes I feel like keeping it to myself... when I'm stuck inside and can't get out.

I agree though, sparingly share your resources... you would be amazed at how little people actually know about the resources on the internet and at other places. Also, think about this... do you really want the guy that digs monster holes and doesn't cover them back up tromping through your spots? Heeeeck no.

The sources on the internet are just blowing my mind. I can find more info in an hour at my home than I could spending a week at the library.

I shared a spot once, gave it to some one even though I had done all the research. But this guy was goona put together a big hunt for a bunch of local MDers. Well last I heard no such hunt ever happened and I suspect he has already been hitting the spot himself many times so. Now I don't worry about sharing site info, I just don't do it anymore.

I have learned to keep my mouth shut when it comes to giving out info. Have been burned on a big find in my area. Friends won't always keep quite.

I don't give exact locations because I have permission to be there, and there are the unethical few that would barge right on in without permission and end it for me. I'm really interested in historical research, so I've had access to some places the average person wouldn't get. Of course, I don't get to keep anything, but I add to the historical record. I had an uncle years ago that spent a lot of time hunting for some gold in SW Oklahoma. He didn't say nothing to nobody, and to this day we don't know where he went, what he found, or what he did with it. Sometimes I will give out exact locations, especially if they're pretty much common knowledge or out in the open. After I someday find the 'Cave With the Iron Door', I will return to this post and see how well I held to my current standards.

RGINN, just be sure and carve "RGINN was here" on the door so we'll know. :D
