Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

I made it over to the old school site late this morning, Kermit was already there. After trying various surrounding areas, we ended up back at the actual site. I didn't manage any silver, and only one wheat cent (1938). While detecting an area near the old site, I found what Kermit says is an old Cracker Jack toy. It is an old headless cow (it came up that way). It was a totally random find. Right before we took off for the day, I found the small ornate peice. I don't know what it is, but it appears to have been affixed to something in the past. It looks like it's copper but it's not, it rang up like a pulltab at 5 inches in the woods and is probably aluminum.

Hope you guys have a great weekend.

Joe

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Hi Joe,

That piece looks like an old picture hanger. I was gonna give you a call after I seen the new forecast, but figured you were already gone.

I'm planning on hitting the camp around 8:00 in the morning if the weather holds and I have some ambition.

That school site has probably been picked over pretty good, but there still may be one find left there that would make an all day search worth it. Who would've figured that there would still be a quarter sized target still there
(except Kermit).

I still think about that quarter lol.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

As Joe said, I was there before him. I was hunting for just under 7 hours and boy are my feet and back killin me. Yea, we were hunting at a few different sites in hopes of finding a virgin site, but it wasn't to be... When I first started my hunt I went directly to the old school site for about 3 hours until Joe called. In that time I didn't find a single keeper signal. At the other sites I found about a buck in clad. Then we went back to the school, well after awhile I managed to pull a 1941s Merc dime (I've never found an "s" before so that was cool) and a 1946d wheatie. Both coins were in an extremely trashy area and I have no idea how I found them... :D

Hope you had a chance to get out and do some looting... :icon_pirat:

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Hey Joe, I'd say you did well finding some "lean beef" on your hunt. Hahaha.

I'd have to agree with Mike and say that ornate piece is definitely some type of picture hanger. I'm not quite sure how it would work, because it looks different than your normal type of hanger... but it makes sense.

Dang TreasureFiend, you were really getting a work out today ay? I ended up cleaning out my gutters, fixing up the gutter pitch, and then raking my yard today. I even shoveled the street... wet leaves are freaking heavy! I was dying after all that work... hopefully I'll be good all day tomorrow.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Hey congrats on your first S mint Merc TF! Let's see a picture of it.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

I will have to put it up tomarrow, I have to use my laptop to change the pix on my SD card to my USB card so I can upload it at work (my work computer doesn't have an SD card slot, that's why I have to these extra steps). I'm a poor mofo and had to get rid of my home internet... LOL

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Another piece of silver for your coffers bud!

Well at least you got a keeper today. I was doing the same as Brett. Worked today on the house, but hopefully play a little tomorrow.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Thanks for the replies guys!

Mikewaz, you've got my #, buddy. Call me whenever you want to go hunting, man! The worst thing that could happen is that I'll have the phone off while sleeping. I was going to call you, but I got a late start that morning, didn't get out til about 10:30. I figured you would either be busy, or out somewhere else, i.e. the camp. There wasn't much to be found where we were, anyway.

Lowbatts, thanks for the identification. That's precisely what it is, now that I'm seeing the one you found. Have any idea on age? Not many people wear suspenders these days, it's cool knowing it was worn by someone a long long time ago. It was about 5 inches deep (under mats of roots, of course).

Yeah, Kermit kicked my culo Saturday. didn't find much, but I sure had a great time. Here's hoping this coming weekend will be hospitable!

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

No idea on age Joe, because this type had a long rund before the modern era of suspenders. But the ones I've found were in sites where concurrent coinage finds dated from the 1880's to 1910.

Yeah, Kermit has a way of hitting it big unless you walk around with a water bottle getting the ground in front of him wet.....

I wonder if that'd work on Goio?

Man you are killer with that M6, I hope you get out this way sometime!

Well that is around the time the school was there. As for coinage to date the site, Joe pulled out a I beleave a 1906 Barber dime and I pulled a 1907 V-Nickel and all the way up to modern clad.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Nice suspender clip & neat CJ Cow!. . . Cracker Jack must have been REALLY big around here back in the 20's & 30's.
I think I've found close to 7 or 8 CJ prizes in the woods this year. . . including two of those cows :D

Take care,

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

Tim,

Thanks for the info. I def want to take a ride out your way, Kermit and I were actually considering maybe a mini road trip out to that park where he dug an Indian with you. Maybe even this weekend if everything (weather, actually) pans out.

Watercolor,

I think it's cool that you found some of those cows. Are they exactly the same type? Do you have a picture of a whole one, complete with head? This is the first Cracker Jack toy I've ever dug, that I'm aware of. Even though I am primarily a coin-shooter, a CJ toy is something I wouldn't mind finding again!

Yeah, Kermit left a large cache buried under a tree behind the pool. Just tell me when and I'll warm up the weather.

Here's a pic of some examples of CJ prizes I've found so far this year. . . including a complete cow.
What's interesting, most of the pot metal CJ prizes from back then were at one time painted. . . and probably with lead paint :o

That small iron looks like a Monopoly game piece actually. I dug up a monopoly thimble earlier this year.

Re: Don't have a cow just because it lost its head!

I've gotten the cars, boats, cannons, carriages but never any animals, those are cool.
