Double SLQ night

Headed out for a hunt at 7pm EST after a thunderstorm. With about an hour of light, hit 2 SLQ’s. After probably 200 trips to this site, I had never hit any SLQ’s then I hit 2 in a short span and they weren’t close together. I jokingly said c’mon another SLQ as I was digging the second and my jaw dropped. Both were worn thin.

It’s so sad that those coins wore down so much. They went through the roaring twenties and prohibition and were circulated to death. I have several worn ones but decided to buy this 2016 gold anniversary issue just so I could enjoy what the originals must have looked like when new. Can you imagine going in a bank in 1920 and getting a roll of 40 new ones for $10!

I agree with you all about the design and it’s also interesting to know they were only made for 14 yrs 1916-1930 with the 1916 having only 52k minted.

I've had this happen to me too. You scan a place off and on for years, and then you find something which makes the whole effort worthwhile. A thumbs up to you!

awesome finds! SLQ's always suffered significant wear issues, but heavy wear like those have tells me they were likely lost well into the 1940's or even early 1950's. What dates are you seeing on other finds from that site?

Don't get them up here really, only dug one nice 1919 in a corn field. Sadly I hit the reverse with the shovel.

This is a description of a 1920s speakeasy during prohibition. I imagine those two SLQs went through a speakeasy or two!

A coin with Red Paint on it is called a "House Coin".
The most common use was when no one was playing music in the Bar or Restaurant and the owner put his own money in so it played.
This way when the till was emptied the owner could recover his own money.
