Hello, I haven't been on in awhile. I recently moved from Ohio back to Florida. I'm using a mine lab xterra 305 and was wondering if the surf/shallow water hunting is worth upgrading my detector vs. hunting dry sand? I'll mainly be hunting Holmes or coquina beaches if you know this area at all. So far I've stuck to parks but can't wait to get to the beach and find something thanks in advance

I use to only detect the dry sand. At that time I had a whites spectrum XLT with the 18" Bigfoot coil. I did very well in the dry sand. Met a guy swinging a Minelab Sovereign with a WOT coil. He had a chain around his neck with gold rings he said he had found them all in the wet sand and shallow water.

I bought a Sovereign and a WOT coil. I started hitting the wet sand and shallow water. My jewelry finds shot up through the roof. So my answer would be yes on upgrading to a detector that can handle the mineralization so you can detect the wet sand and shallow water.

If I lived in Florida I'd be waist deep in the water swinging a detector every day:laughing7:

Thanks Randy that's what I assumed just wasn't sure. I think Ill start looking for a better detector. ??? Time to start that hunt I guess.

you already have a great dry sand and dirt machine. Why not just buy a new or used PI unit for the water and wet sand?

Water is where the gold is.

I'm planning on keeping the 305. I was thinking of going for a little cheaper machine my first time out in the water. Maybe a stingray or sand shark. Does anyone who has used either of these know the learning curve? How hard are they to get to know? I'm sure down the road I'll upgrade hopefully it will pay for it's self.

Sand shark is really durable - it is a PI machine though so you have to be ok with that. It doesn't ignore anything, I tell ya!
