Detector(s) used
AT Pro/BH Platinum, (Garret Pro-Pointer)
Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
would it work? if i cut even strips that cover the bottom and 1/2 an inch up each sides of a coil. would it do the trick? Most of my detecting is done in parks, mostly grass and some dirt areas...

As long as no metal sticks to the tape as your going, that would not be good

Is the coil showing much wear and tear?

Yes it will a few swings,I learn the hard way and invested in a coil cover ($8-20 bucks)depending on coil/type size🎧

Apart from the fact that the duck tape will look terrible after a while with wear and tear why worry about a coil cover? I have 2 coils with no covers from day one and they are still in good shape, if they were not durable enough for every day use with out covers then manufacturers would not have sold them like that.

Covers are just a extra bonus for coils to keep them nice, after all a coil can still stop working properly with or with out a cover. If covers are not available for your coils then you could always plastic dip them but.......never tried it or done it.

But if covers are available then just cough up the dough and get them.

I was thinking the exact same tape. The coil on my Time ranger only has a few small scratches. I would expect the same for the DD coils im getting for my AT pro. The ATpro comes used, so i dont really know the condition of the stock coil just yet. Although the pictures on the eBay listing showed them to be in great condition. I want to protect my new 5x8, and the stock coil from future scratches. This way i can ask for a little higher price, in case i want to sell the unit if i dont like it.

Forget the duct tape, your better off using plasti-dip spray sold in hardware stores or truck bed liner spray from auto parts store....

Duct tape will save your coil from scratches but it will also hold some black sand which will mess up the stability. Duct tape also
"dresses down" your $$$ detector to make it look less sellable to thieves.

Watching too much Red Green are ya ? LOL Canucks will get it. LOL

I use Plasti-dip spray also, 4 or 5 nice light coats really works well and looks nice and it holds up well. If the coil ever has to go back to Garrett for warranty issues, the dip can be peeled off easily. Because you can peel it off it gets you away from, " You modified your coil. " Loop hole on warranty issues.
I hate coil covers and plasti-dip overs protection without a coil cover.
