Re: Dug a Jug - UPDATE
Well I tried to contact the Branford Historical Society today, their web site says they are open Saturday, but no one answered the phone… not to be deterred, I called the CT State Historical Society, the lady in the library department spent about 10 minutes with me on the phone, but couldn’t come up with any info…but she did recommend calling the local library in Branford…here’s some info they were able to provide -
Henry Bohn was born in France 1859, came to this country with his parents and settled in the New Haven area, he was employed as a mason for awhile, then worked as a brewmaster at the Quinnipiac Brewing Co., that later became the Yale Brewing Co.(coincidentally I’ve dug a few bottles from that Brewery ) In 1886 he opened the Oakhall Café in Branford and also owned the Bayview Hotel in the Stony Creek section of town(found a picture from late 1800’s-early 1900’s, you can just see the hotel in the far left side of the photo) he died in 1899 at the ripe old age of 40….There was more info but I took what notes I could... I’ll have to go to the library and get it all photocopied…no mention of jug-making, but I think it’s possible there might be a link to the hotel or café. At least I have more to go on now, and plan to vist the historical society soon…I did ask them to verify the dates of his birth and death, he seemed to accomplish quite a bit in his short life…
