Dug copper & brass

Will the scrap yards take copper & brass that is plated? What I mean is sometimes you will find copper or brass nuts & washers Some with like a chrome plate on them. Also, will they take old green & thin brittle copper? I dig this stuff all the time, and if I can recycle it that would be great. Thanks, Chris

I keep 3 buckets out side and when I come home from detectin g. I put all my juck in the buckets. 1 for alumin 1 formetal and the other for copper and brass. At the end of the year I take it all in and sell it when I take all the other scrap that I get thur the year. It all help pay for the gas and what every I decide to buy.....Matt

the recycle centers or scrap yards will take all metal, even old rust!

I separate the following:

tin/sheet iron: this is any ferrous items that are less than 1/8" thick

heavy iron: anything over 1/8" thick, including all fasteners

yellow brass

red brass

aluminum: separate cast, cans, and extruded for maximum returns

304 stainless steel

316 stainless steel: usually stamped 316 on it somewhere

#2 copper: any copper that is discolored

#1 copper: any copper that is shiny or bright

#2 insulated copper wire: appliance cords or multiple wire strands

#1 insulated copper wire: any wire with one thick copper strand in it

lead: fishing sinkers, bullets, tire rim thingys

remember all metal is worth something, call different scrap yards in your area as prices do vary greatly. There are other metals too, but these are the ones I usually find when detecting. I do scrap as a hobby as well.

Can you tell me the difference between yellow brass and red brass.
Also how much the price difference.
I came across some big old brass door closers that came out of a school, are they worth getting.

If the closers are easy to get then definitely get em. You will have to take anything non brass out to make it clean. Im not sure but I think some door closers use a plunger type deal. Shouldn't be hard to get out. But yeah get em.

yellow brass is much more common: keys, gas fittings, some lamps and chandeliers. Sometimes it is nickel plated like in the tubes that are on the bottom of a sink and some industrial air fittings

Red brass, is not as common: the most common is the relief valve on the water heaters, gate valves and industrial fittings as well.

I just dumped all of my brass last week end:

yellow $1.07 per pound
red $1.30 per pound

As a comparison #2 copper is about $1.40 here in Illinois. Al cans are $.33 per pound, Tin is up to $100.00 per ton and heavy is at $120. per ton ..... go Turkey!!!

It was my biggest pay day ever!!!!
