I'm now trying to learn about this on the interweb, but I thought I'd post here too. Any idea on the age or any other details? Thanks all!

It could be a 1700's civilian pewter button. Don't quote me on that...my track record kinda blows ;)

dude if I dug something from the 1700s I'd be super stoked. the park I'm hunting was prolly cleared for ag use in the 1700s then was developed as a park in the early 1930s.

the shank just looked kinda modern to me but I have no experience whatsoever in dating these.

That is a Colonial Drilled shank button from the 1700's...Most likely brass with a pewter looking seam:icon_scratch:

If there is green patina it's not pewter if none then it is..

Different but killer find:headbang:

That shank looks off to me- never seen a period pewter...civilian or military...with a drilled hole shank. It's an interesting button, can you confirm the base metal?

The shank doesn't bother me as much as the two round spots on the outside edge of the button back. They look like casting sprues that were cut off. Did original pewter buttons have them? And on a side note, while looking for your button shank I came across this site that reproduces early buttons. I clicked on the civilian link at the top of the page. As I moved my cursor over the numbers a picture popped up in the box to the left.

I noticed the spurs as well and missing mold seam.

HEY MMMMMMMMURAY HECK OF A NICE BUTTON FROM THE 17SSSSS ....

Agree with those that say modern 20th C.

Yep, shank has that look, along with the plug thingy which I assume is a result of a modern casting process. It's probably lighter weight compared to an erly button the same size.
