That specific color and specific "banding pattern" of onyx is characteristic of Mexican Onyx... which has been very frequently used in the making of Mexico souvenirs for American (or other) tourists to take home from their vacation. I own several Mexican Onyx souvenirs from my long-ago vacation to Cozumel, Mexico.

I agree with SkaBa that your cube of Mexican onyx is the right shape and size to be a paperweight. Doesn't seem to be much else it could "function" as.

Another choice beside paper weight. My father was a rock hound and had a saw. He would cut petrified wood into book ends.
