Going through finds box this afternoon. Came across a TOASTED coin which I assume is a fat IHP. No pics attached…..it’s beyond that point. Date is illegible. Looking at the back I can clearly see the word “cent” and above it what appears to be”C 1”. Never heard of nor seen that on a coin.

Question…..is anyone aware of a cent with C1 on the back, or did part of the O and E (and all of the N) get eaten by the soil?

Without pictures no one will be able to help!

ONE CENT on the back. You're seeing the worn out O and E.

I'm seeing a portion of the N ! Definitely an Indian head penny!

Yep. The wreath says “Indian Head” all day long.

Think they were made from 1859 until 64 or 65. If your coin says 1863, I’d agree that you have one.

Variety 1: Copper-nickel. 1859 only. Wreath on reverse.
Variety 2: Copper-nickel. 1860-64. Oak leaves on reverse.
With the civil war came hoarding. Merchants started bringing out thin copper tokens due to coin shortages. The mint responds by coming out with a thinner cent in 1864. 39,000,000 struck.
Variety 3. Bronze. 1864-1909.
