E-Trac Sunray X-1 Probe & Coil

:-\ Hi! folks, I am thinking of getting a Sunray probe for my E-Trac and a smaller Coil for hunting in woods and parks. What is your advice for me and your thoughts? I would appreciate it very much. Thanks again, Charlie

P.S. I found this sunray at a nice price, http://store.columbiametaldetectors.com/x1targetprobe.html . Your thoughts

Love the probe, hate smaller coils but I hunt fields. All the dealers would be about the same price on the Sunray, just remember to clarify right or left swing.

Thanks Iron Patch, it's tough deciding what to do, I have a Bullseye II but I get interference from my machine and I have to keep moving my machine away all the time which irritates me. Thanks, Charlie

Thanks for your feedback Dan, I have been hearing and reading a lot on the Garrett and the cons of the Sunray but it also has a lot of positives, I'm confused. :BangHead:

Re: E-Trac Sunray X-1 Probe & Coil

Charlie,

If you have the E-Trac... you GOTTA get the Sunray X-1, period. Having the power of the E-Trac's discrimination at your finger tips is priceless.

I have a Pistol Probe, and while it goes deep... it's also an ALL METAL probe. This drive me NUTS sometimes.

Back when I got the Pistol Probe, I defended it... for many reasons. Well, I was wrong on all of them. The Sunray X-1 is thee probe to buy for your E-Trac. It's always on your detector, it's always got power, it goes deep enough (but you have to have your sensitivity up to at least 25 for good depth, and BE RUNNING IN MANUAL SENSE! AUTO seems to de-tune and de-sensitize for me on the E-Trac), it's waterproof!

What are the cons of the Sunray as you have been reading.. I'll try to talk you out of all of them ;) The Sunray probe is really that good.

I have the Excelerator 6" and it's great in SUPER TRASHY areas, but don't expect to be using it in the woods much, unless you want to methodically hunt every square inch at a slow snails pace. You also don't need it at a park unless you are in some SUPER DENSE trash. There are areas of Washington Park that are really trashy... and while you COULD use a smaller coil, you don't need to. You just need to slow down and listen for the tones. Even with the small coil, you will have to go slow, it will just allow you to separate some of the tones better, allow for really accurate pinpointing. I have the 6", but I rarely use it... it's nice to have it when you need it though. You might entertain the 4.5" x 7" excelerator too.

Thanks for the feedback Brett as always you've always got some good things to say. I am leaning towards the Sunray although I hear it adds weight to the machine and the cord gets hung up in the woods but I think I could fix that. Thanks again Brett, Charlie

Re: E-Trac Sunray X-1 Probe & Coil

The X-1 probe is a "must have." I can't imagine hunting without it. You won't be disappointed with it. Yeah, it adds a little weight. I'm 47 years old and can swing my detector with the probe for hours with no problem.

Yea!! but wait till you get to my age Gibsondan the only thing I can swing is my Kilt!! thanks for the input I seem to be leaning towards the X-1 can't stand my Bullseye II as the e-trac interferes with it all the time. Charlie

Also when you ordered one did you have to buy the upper shaft? Thanks, Charlie

You want to buy the extra shaft for two reasons.

1) It comes ready to go, no messing around.

2) If it's like an explorer you can not bypass the probe, so if it has a problem and you have no extra shaft, you're done.

Great points Iron Patch you've made up my mind, Thanks, Charlie

I bought mine from detectordepot.com. They send it already attached to an upper shaft that fits the E-trac. I called and talked to them before I ordered. Very friendly people.

Re: E-Trac Sunray X-1 Probe & Coil

You want to order it mounted to the upper shaft for sure. And if you upgrade your detector, you can keep your sunray and put the old shaft back on. That's what I did when I went from the SE Pro the E-Trac.

Charlie, if you are concerned with weight.... start by mounting the probe to the inside edge of the battery compartment. I eventually move mine down above the sunray switch box so it's right next to me at the hole. When I put the probe away, I only clip the probe on one of the clips and the probe points down. This makes the cable exit up, and I find it keeps it from snagging on stuff, and it's super easy to pop in and out of the clip.

Don't forget to get into the habit of flipping your sunray switch back to the main coil when you put your probe away. If you wait until you stand up, you may forget in that short period of time... I used to.

I'm pretty sure you can order direct from Ralph at Sunray if you wanted to.

Thanks Brett, I have ordered the Sunray and the 6" EXcelerator coil should have it in about 5 days, thanks again, Charlie
