Bounty Hunter Tracker IV
Hi everyone, I just moved to Eagan, MN from Richfield, MN and am wondering if anyone knows the laws about metal detecting or can tell me if there are any decent places to hunt. Don't worry, I'm not looking to steal your honey hole, just want to be able to wave my stick without getting reprimanded for it.

Thank you in advance!

Check the gopher state treasurer Hunter web site. It is mostly Twin Cities members, and I am sure someone on their forum will have an answer for you. The only rules I am aware of are Ramsey County Parks, which requires a permit, Three Rivers park district which doesn't allow detecting, and City of Minneapolis which doesn't allow water detecting from June to

No reply from GSTH. Posted almost 24 hours ago :(

Just realized Eagan was Dakota County. Emailed the city administrator in 2007 about detecting parks and was told it was not allowed. However a Gopher State member told me a few years ago that he lives there and hunts there and has never had an issue. So I would assume it is okay unless a parks person tells you otherwise.

Thanks susanmn, anyone else have insight on Eagan? Not wanting my gear to get taken away as I've heard it's happened to some.

newtector, if you can cite any examples of someone "getting their gear taken away" for detecting in innocuous normal routine city parks (where there is not an actual rule or law that said "no detecting"), I would LOVE to hear it. Please let us know examples.

I suspect if you have any examples of someone getting "confiscations", "tickets", "fines", etc.... it will no doubt be for someone sneaking around historic sensitive monuments. Or someone who can't take a warning, or somehow being obnoxious, etc... But if you have an example to the contrary, I would LOVE to hear it.

Ouch, I just went and re-read my post. And see that I came down rather "terse". But glad you didn't take offense. Pheew :)

None taken, been reading your posts for a long time.

I have no personal examples of this. Only what I've heard and read from others on Tnet and GSTH which is the main club in the twin cities.

I don't know about y'all but I'm not exactly in the position financially to have to purchase more gear.

As I suspected.

Correct. And if you ask THEM for "examples" of this, they TOO will have no examples of this.

I'm not saying to throw-caution to the wind and go tromp on historic sensitive monuments. Just saying this notion that somehow "navy commando seal archies lurk around every tree" has gotten crazy.

Tom, do not attack members like that again, it violates several rules....

Seeing the warm weather coming, anyone want to do some swinging in Eagan during the day next week?
