Found this today. I am wondering if it is from the civil war or war of 1812. TIA

Not civil war era and not War-of-1812. It is a 1-piece brass New York State Militia button from the 1820s, plus or minus a couple of years. The backmark says "Sup---" and "Imperial Standard" which is a British marking, so it would not have been manufactured for New York during the War-of-1812, nor during the US boycott of British goods for about a decade after the end of the war.
