We found this button digging around in an old box of dug items at a church sale.

Anyone have any ideas?

5/8" in diameter
Backmark - Shannon & Miller A-N

It has an eagle holding a snake near the head in it's beak, and the other end near the tail in his right talon.

Very cool button design, haven't seen this one before. Shannon, Miller and Crane made buttons from about 1866 to 1892 so I doubt it is Civil War era.

I haven't found your button, but I think your back mark says "Shannon & Miller N. Y." That should make your button 1867, as later in 1867 the firm name changed to "Shannon, Miller & Crane, NYC".

On my cell phone that looks like Mexico's Country Eagle standing in the prayer cactus.
