My friend found these and about 200 more while demolishing his house. He knew of my love of history so offered me some of his collection. I chose a legal document which mentions the Militia Act, an arrest warrant and an ink blotter with some fantastic doodles. I'll be getting these preserved and framed so that they stay in as good of shape as they are now. Thanks for looking!

Fantastic! That ink blotter with the doodles is my favorite by far. WOW! Were these located in the walls when he was doing demo work? Very well preserved and really awesome documents.

Yep...inside the walls! He figures they were in a box in the attic which slipped down between the walls at some point and were forgotten.

that's what I call cool

great stuff!!

These personal papers just takes you back in the time period, so cool!:icon_thumright:

If any of the envelopes were saved, I'd be interested in them.
Don......

Any stamps with those envelopes... I will be interested in them ... :)

:P~

The Militia document is actually it's own envelope...the address is on the back...you can see it bleeding through running opposite the text. Sorry, no stamps.

I especially like how he was writing the word "chump" so that if you flip the page upside down it still says "chump"...

That's awesome. I didn't notice that until you just mentioned it. At the top it looks like he was trying to do the same thing with the letters "ominuo" in two spots. However, that's not a word, so perhaps I'm not reading his cursive correctly. But it looks like he was trying to do the same thing so it looked the same upside down.

It's no wonder most people were illiterate in those days. They couldn't read each others' handwriting!

These documents are a great find, and well worth preserving.

When you say your friend offered you a few from his collection, I hope that means he's keeping the rest! It's scary to think of what some people will throw away.

He definitely not throwing any away. He's offering them to interested persons piece by piece...

I am interested in all of them....doodles are great!

I wonder if the unfinished horse at the bottom was depicting throwing it's rider into the air headlong.
