Been spending most of my time on a site near my house. I hae spent 100's of hours detecting and have removed nearly all of the pulltabs and junk. Iv'e found a couple of old coins one being a 1719-1724 British Colonial King George 1st half penny. Tons of Colonial buttons, many "Dandy" ones. Colonial spoon, buckles etc... Each different area gives up clusters of artifacts from different time periods ranging from colonial-present.

Today I found this ring. I had no idea what it was, but figured it had to be a bit old. I posted it on "what is it" and learned that it is an early Air Corps ring. The ring is very small, can't even get it on my pinky finger, so I suspect it was lost by a female Air Corp.

After learning about what the sybols on the ring stand for, the find has a new meaning. It's amazing how by learning the history of an artifact changes the meaning and value of it. :icon_thumleft:
Thanks for looking.

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

My Dad was in the 8TH Army air corp. 44th bomb group(BG). It was before the Airforce. They did all the big runs over Berlin and D-Day. One of the medals we have of his has that emblem. They flew the b-17 and the b-24 the neat planes with all the nose art like the Memphis Bell.
A very collectable relic and great piece of history from the greatest generation.
Many famous people flew during that time. Jimmy Stewart was a squadron leader as was Will lundy.
Here is some info of the guys that lived back then .

A site of mine to preserving that history.

Thanks Best find I have seen in some time. Most of that stuff is found in wrecked planes in far away lands.

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

Wow TnMountains. First of all I have the upmost respect for your dad serving our country. As for the Greatest Generation, you can say that again. I give history tours of the WWII era. I will definately check out your site. This story is getting better. I would love to find out exactly why and to what group and the significant of this ring. Do you think the ring belonged to a female giving the size or possibly a gentlemans pinky ring. :icon_scratch:

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

during WW2 --it was quite common to make or have made lil gift items for your "woman" who ever she might be --wife , sweet heart or dear ole mom "back home" -- these were termed "sweetheart" items --due to the small size its very likely your "ring" is one made as a "gift" for a woman.

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

Yes as Ivan said.
I would be curious if there were any numbers on the side of the ring possibly a group number. Its a pretty cool item as the army quickly built the air force. They called the guys I think it was 90 day wonders. They were up and flying that fast. Really a great bunch of History fading away as it all does in time. The odds of surviving your missions were slim.It was like one in three you did not survive.
You flew 15 missions at first. Then they changed it to 25 and later something like 30. My dad flew 33.
They would often win awards for the most shot up ship on the field.
The ring hopefully has more of a story to tell.

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

No numbers on the ring. It is the army color "olive drab". Maybe I could contact someone from the corp and they could point me in the direction to narrow down the origins of this ring. :dontknow:

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

Send a picture to the web master Lomadanger at the 44th bomb group and see if he knows anything. I am pretty sure its an A.A.C sweet heart ring like Ivan said ?
Keep us updated sir. Here is a sweet heart locket from the army air corp.

Re: Early Air Corps ring.

during WW2 --the air force as we call it today was known as the "army air corp" --thus the army drab olive green color
