The three detectateers got an early start this weekend. They are beginning the harvest in our parts. We are uncontrollably salivating at the prospects for this fall. We went back to the site where earlier in the season we found many colonial and early american finds. Some of the corn was harvested in parts of the field. Across the road from where I found my beautiful half real and 2 King George the thirds, counterstamped draped bust, classic head half cent and where Kyle found his nice Liberty Cap largie and where Kirks nice Draped bust Largie was pulled out . Same side of the road where Kyles perfect 1 Real was found. He also found a george the 2nd on the side of todays hunt. Was detecting like John Johnny Walter when my detector about shattered my eardrum. 3 to 4 inches down a nice 1817 Coronet Large Cent was my find of the day. No buttons but I did find a few shot musketballs to round out my hunt. This area we detected today is not the area where we are waiting to get back in. That comes later when they harvest more crop.We will return tomorrow.

Chris, since so much detail was showing I got my US Large Cents book at and it looks like your 1817 is a Newcomb 2 variety. At least it is not a common variety. :>)

I tried to point out the details that are used to determined this variety, and if you have any question PM me. The only other possibility is that the Newcomb 1 variety, which is identical on the Obverse but differs slightly on the Reverse, but from what I am seeing I am fairly certain it is the Newcomb 2. Good find. There are 17 varieties of the 1817 Large Cent.

What a great coin!!!

You're probably already back out there as I write this, so I'm hoping you're finding more!!!

Chris,
Congrats on the old coppa. I'll have to drive by a few of the fields around here and see if they harvested yet. Here is to a great fall season with many old coppers, silvers and hopefully one or two golds.

Happy hunting.

Derek my man........You are so right dude. It looks like where they will resume harvesting is right in the area where we are anxiously awaiting. ( at least on this side of the street). The other side is the special side. Soybean. Next week will be a blast. We are in our fall harvest double day weekend schedule. Nothing will stop us now.

Hey Chris, Very nice copper. Coppers are always a favorite find of mine and am sure yours also. Missed the draped by 10 years but am sure there are a few hiding for you to grasp soon. Draped coppers are sooooo dandy arent they.

You aren't kidding there my man. I found 7 just this year including a pewter counterfeit. I can never find enough of them.

Nice work! Any time a Coppa like that comes up, it is a GREAT hunt!

I was worried that rain would delay the harvest here, but it looks like they will harvest here Early this year! So we are drooling all over our shirts now too. ;D

Keep it up!

Chris...that is a beauty my friend. I always like viewing your posts to see what the 3 coppa' diggers have come up with. I bet you three are a blast to hunt with.
I love my coppas dude but it would be nicer to find more of the era silver. Not that I'm complaining. It's awesome to find green in the hole.

Thanks Burdie. I'm pleased with the shape it's in. They are usually more corroded than this.
