Similar as they are, those don't match... Note differences in the anchor. A picture or description of the back might help, or someone here may recognize your variety even without that. Some are fashion buttons, rather than actually military.

Thought it may had just been erosion which caused the differences.

Both appear to have the same star pattern around outside as well as the rope knotting.

Not sure but hopefully it comes out. He has a few different types which all appear to be army.

I could be wrong, but I don't think it's military. The eagles wings are only a couple lines. :dontknow:

I agree with Erving. If the back is plain, than it is likely steel and a fashion button.

Have to look @ some button books when i get home... but - this might be (of course post civil war) naval button instead of a fashion button, i seem to recall a similar one being around spanish american war time frame...

Sorry, but it is absolutely definitely a civilian Fashion Clothing Industry imitation of an actual US Navy button. The true Military-issue ones always had excellent die-work, meaning the details of the emblem (such as, the feathers on the eagle's wings) are sharp and clear. Also, the eagle on Manwayvan's button has very "round-topped" wings. His button does not appear in any book on Military Uniform buttons, such as the Albert book and the Tice book.

Here's a photo of an actual US Navy button. Notice how "sharp" the detail-work on the button is. Compare it with the other photo, which shows a cheap-quality, crude civilian-usage imitation of it.

Manwayan's button is indeed a very crude, cheaply made civilian-usage one, with very weak details, because the manufacturer did not want to pay the high cost of having a Master Craftsman create a sharply-detailed stamping die for making the button. It is most probably from a yachting jacket or an imitation navy pea-coat.

I think that just about everyone that metal detects has found one of these fashion buttons!:laughing7: I found one at a site that gave me five military eagle buttons. Post a picture of the back if it has one please.
Here's the one I found.
