East Texas points

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum, I hunted for arrowheads a little bit as a kid, but my dad and I really got into artifact hunting the past few months. We have found a couple of spots on an east Texas lake. We need some help identifying some of these points, we would appreciate it if anyone could help, thanks, Josh

Nice points, where are you at in East TX. I'm looking for a spot to go to near Houston.
I havent found an arrowhead in about 25 years.

Hey Atlantis,

Wow, Thanks for your help and expertise,you really know alot about this area. These points are not from toledo bend, but a large lake to the southwest very close to toledo bend (S.R.). My dad and I live in houston, but we have a place near the lake. During the last few months we have been hunting in a few areas around the lake with some luck, but it has been hard work. Ive seen what you've been finding around toledo bend, and it just blows my mind. What techniques do you use while hunting? Do you search in one area, or do you scout around looking for new spots? We've been kind of walking the shorlines, and grubbing around. I'm not sure if we should cover more area, or concentrate our efforts in a few spots. Thanks again for your help, Josh

I'm from houston also, I don't know any areas to hunt around houston, i'm sure there are some good spots somewhere, maybe galveston? I know that people used to find alot of artifacts on Mcfaddin beach, between high island and port arthur.Lake livingston is not too far, and its pretty low right now, anyway good luck, Josh

Josh & Colt sounds like you two should hook up and get the heck out there. Sweet points.
I find the best time to hunt points is after a rain storm, walk and keep both eyes open, find one scour that area move on to the next.

Howdy Josh...

Yes Lake SR should have tons of stuff. Here is a little primer on finding artifacts in a lake. See no point in guarding these tricks as sooner or later you will figure them out for yourself.

Normally you will find artifacts anywhere there is a creek or bayou entering the lake. Look for higher ground which is pretty obvious....clay banks and hardpan is good for finding points...especially old ones. When walking the shore or dry expanses...especially after a rain...look for chips and pottery.....but mostly chips.....If you dont find flint chips move on. Also keep an eye on your stumps. You can get an eye for the original lay of the land in the lake by looking at the roots on the stumps....hills will be worn down and you will see stumps suspended in the air with roots showing down to the ground.....you can tell exactly were hills once were by looking at the roots.....it is more likely you will find artifacts in these places than any other as that is the more likely spots for camps and village areas..

Main thing is this you are more likely to find stuff near creeks and where the greatest intensity of wash is....look for areas that receive much wind and wave action...not the quiet inlets. And remember in many lakes it is illegal to hunt artifacts...if you do so there is a chance you can be caught and fined. So be discrete, make as little obvious impact on the landscape as possible, and if you are told to leave, do so.

Josh...very nice collection. Atlantis...very impressive info...
I had some arrow heads I found along the coast here in Maine when I was a kid...don't know whatever became of them... Would love to get a collection started again...which will please my wife to no end...something else for me to collect...I am sure she will be overjoyed...

Any quick way to tell if they are arrowheads other than the obvious etchings etc. on them, for alot I have seen posted elsewhere look like nothing more than rocks to me.

Hey Atlantis,

Thanks for the great info, you described exactly the spot where we have found most of our stuff. It is a little point with a creek on one side and the other side is exposed to the wind and waves, eroded down to the clay on the shoreline. I can't wait to get back up there and scout around for some other spots similar to what you describe. Thanks again for all your help, Josh

Hey Josh,

My pleasure....hope you make some great finds there. Remember that your one place there is not the only place you will find points.....check out every spot where there is a creek, wash or high ground.....you will find there is hardly a high spot with nearby water that wont produce at least a few relics. Its amazing how much stuff the Indians left behind....try and picture in your mind what the landscape looked like BEFORE the lake was there.
