I've gotten pretty good at picking out LWC and Buffalo/V nickels from edge searching.

Sure, you can be "good" at them but nickels still need to be date searched. I'm pretty good at finding old nickel tone myself but if I did that I would have missed the XF 1938 I've got in my collection.

I've also found an AU 1938, still has some luster on it from date checking, and also my 1939! cant pass ANYTHING up
