EDITED: new pics post 20/Confederate button & arrowhead!

I got out for a little while this afternoon. A friend and I went to a field to hunt points, and I picked up a nice one. That's about it for the afternoon of walking the fields, but then we went into town where some old shanty-houses were torn down to accomodate plans for a larger municipal building. We've hunted there before, and found some wheats and a barber dime, among other odds and ends. Today I got lucky and found a Georgia state seal civil war button. It's a good solid button with a "Hortsmann & Allien N.Y." backmark. This is the second Georgia button I've found...although the first was in much better shape with most of the gilt still on it. I still like this one. Funny, the war wasn't fought here, but I've found 3 rare civil war buttons in this town so far (the 3rd is a lined C button). Also pictured are a couple buckles, '35 and '53d wheats, and some kind of copper or brass flap...maybe for covering a keyhole?

Re: Confederate button & arrowhead!

Here are some more pics...one is of the strange axe-head shaped piece. It's still hard to see the detail, but it looks like it might be a C and W, one over the other, in a fancy script.

I also pictured the 1918 auto registration tag after cleaning it up. There is a pic of some more stuff from the site, including a spoon that has been WORN off, not broken. Somebody really liked their beans, cause it took a lot of bowl scraping to wear that spoon down like that.

The Georgia button fits in nicely with my other 2 civil war buttons ;).

Very nice digs. I really like the button. It still has great detail. Do you have any info of what company or div. it may be from? Awesome finds. Thanks

Nice button! Don't use aluminum jelly on this one. Use only if gold gilt is present as it will create a reddish finish otherwise.

Thanks for the comments!

I really wonder what the axe shaped piece is. I'm thinking a keyhole flap? Has anyone seen one like this?

Tom, the gun parts are just from a toy. I haven't found any real identifiable gun parts yet, but a friend of mine found a whole pistol once.

Plumb50, I think it's brass or maybe copper. It's reddish, but even brass gets reddish colored sometimes in our soil.

Gary, I don't know. All I know is it's a Georgia button.

Nana, Thanks! I've watched you build a nice collection in a short amount of time too!

MM...thanks, and you're welcome! :)

Lookin, I'm planning on it. I've been waiting for the opportunity to get back over there. It might not be until this weekend, but maybe I can sneak in a hunt during the evening in the next day or two. If I find much of anything worthwhile, I'll post it.

Mike, thanks for the advice. I had to scrub the crap out of it to get it this clean. I figured I'd stop while I was ahead.

Re: EDITED: new pics post 20/Confederate button & arrowhead!

I LOVE the Georgia Button TOO as I am from Georgia but have adopted Virginia too. It is a beautiful button but depending on who/what is on the backmark, I think it may either pre-date the Civil War or post date it because of the fact that it even has a backmark. Most of the Confederate Civil War era buttons have no backmarks because the companies like Waterbury did not want to be prosecuted by the U.S. Government for abedding and aiding the South.

If you go look at buttons for sale on relic websites, that is why the Confederate buttons with no backmarks cost soo much more. Awesome job, what part of South Georgia you live in?

Just above Tallahassee Fl.

Both Ga buttons have the hortsmann backmarks. From what I was reading, Hortsmann and allien in NY sold these buttons to the various state militias prior to the war. When the war broke out, the unmarked buttons were made locally. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but it makes sense to me. I figured the one I found most recently is worth around $250-$300 by comparing it to others I've seen on the net. Sound about right?
