Here are some thoughts to consider. Pieced together from various stories, engineering estimates by retired commonsense engineers and swaqs.

The simpleton policies this Administration promotes are just not well thought out, not practical and spend tax dollars to pay the media and academia to regurgitate a narrative of ignorance. Ditto global warming! D





Electric Vehicles

The utility companies have thus far had little to say about the alarming cost projections to operate electric vehicles (EVs) or the increased rates that they will be required to charge their customers. It is not just the total amount of electricity required, but the transmission lines and fast charging capacity that must be built at existing filling stations. Neither wind nor solar can support any of it. Electric vehicles will never become the mainstream of transportation!



In the first part of our exposé on the problems with electric vehicles (EVs), we showed that they were too expensive, too unreliable, rely on materials mined in China and other unfriendly countries, and require more electricity than the nation can afford. In this second part, we address other factors that will make any sensible reader avoid EVs like the plague.



EV Charging Insanity



In order to match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy 12 hours, an EV charging station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes. No one likely thinks about the fact that it can take 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge a vehicle between empty or just topping off. What are the drivers doing during that time?


ICSC-Canada board member New Zealand-based consulting engineer Bryan Leyland describes why installing electric car charging stations in a city is impractical:



“If you’ve got cars coming into a petrol station, they would stay for an average of five minutes. If you’ve got cars coming into an electric charging station, they would be at least 30 minutes, possibly an hour, but let’s say its 30 minutes. So that’s six times the surface area to park the cars while they’re being charged. So, multiply every petrol station in a city by six. Where are you going to find the place to put them?”

The government of the United Kingdom is already starting to plan for power shortages caused by the charging of thousands of EVs. Starting in June 2022, the government will restrict the time of day you can charge your EV battery. To do this, they will employ smart meters that are programmed to automatically switch off EV charging in peak times to avoid potential blackouts.



In particular, the latest UK chargers will be pre-set to not function during 9-hours of peak loads, from 8 am to 11 am (3-hours), and 4 pm to 10 pm (6-hours). Unbelievably, the UK technology decides when and if an EV can be charged, and even allows EV batteries to be drained into the UK grid if required. Imagine charging your car all night only to discover in the morning that your battery is flat since the state took the power back. Better keep your gas-powered car as a reliable and immediately available backup! While EV charging will be an attractive source of revenue generation for the government, American citizens will be up in arms.



Used Car Market



The average used EV will need a new battery before an owner can sell it, pricing them well above used internal combustion cars. The average age of an American car on the road is 12 years. A 12-year-old EV will be on its third battery. A Tesla battery typically costs $10,000 so there will not be many 12-year-old EVs on the road. Good luck trying to sell your used green fairy tale electric car!



Tuomas Katainen, an enterprising Finish Tesla owner, had an imaginative solution to the battery replacement problem—he blew up his car! New York City-based Insider magazine reported (December 27, 2021):



“The shop told him the faulty battery needed to be replaced, at a cost of about $22,000. In addition to the hefty fee, the work would need to be authorized by Tesla…Rather than shell out half the cost of a new Tesla to fix an old one, Katainen decided to do something different… The demolition experts from the YouTube channel Pommijätkät (Bomb Dudes) strapped 66 pounds of high explosives to the car and surrounded the area with slow-motion cameras…the 14 hotdog-shaped charges erupt into a blinding ball of fire, sending a massive shockwave rippling out from the car…The videos of the explosion have a combined 5 million views.”



We understand that the standard Tesla warranty does not cover “damage resulting from intentional actions,” like blowing the car up for a YouTube video.



EVs Per Block In Your Neighborhood



A home charging system for a Tesla requires a 75-amp service. The average house is equipped with 100-amp service. On most suburban streets the electrical infrastructure would be unable to carry more than three houses with a single Tesla. For half the homes on your block to have electric vehicles, the system would be wildly overloaded.



Batteries



“Although the modern lithium-ion battery is four times better than the old lead-acid battery, gasoline holds 80 times the energy density. The great lithium battery in your cell phone weighs less than an ounce while the Tesla battery weighs 1,000 pounds. And what do we get for this huge cost and weight? We get a car that is far less convenient and less useful than cars powered by internal combustion engines. Bryan Leyland explained why:



When the Model T came out, it was a dramatic improvement on the horse and cart. The electric car is a step backward into the equivalence of an ordinary car with a tiny petrol tank that takes half an hour to fill. It offers nothing in the way of convenience or extra facilities.”



Our Conclusion

The electric automobile will always be around in a niche market likely never exceeding 10% of the cars on the road. All automobile manufacturers are investing in their output and all will be disappointed in their sales. Perhaps they know this and will manufacture just what they know they can sell....

yea hopefully these 4 years if we survive, is a wakeup call .
what I almost said is forbidden here so I'll leave it with hopefully the country doesn't turn to
this with everyone having to walk to the corner and waiting for the electric bus to take them
to work, the store, vacation, or wherever and returned to their "Little Boxes" by Lockdown

This past week Stellantis-LG announced the Windsor Ontario will be the home to a $5,000,000,000.00 battery plant.
($5 BILLION)
Gee about 2500 workers will be employed-yippy! :hello2: Right?
Wrong!
The Feds kicked in $500,000,000 so that works out to be $220,000.00 in subsidized payments per employee.
The city bought the property for $45,000,000.00 so they expropriate the lands
They will give a 20 yr tax rebate to the company-another $70,000,000.00
There hasn't been any news release on what the provincial gave in $$$

Meanwhile already the taxpayer is on the hook for $625,000,000.00

Meanwhile the fuel to gas a vehicle is sitting at $6.62 a US gal.
No hope/wish for the 97% of the population driving today of EV ownership
So that's another example of life-the 97% supporting the 3% lifestyle.

This last winter there wasn't enough power in the Quebec power grid to supply power to the people during hte cold snap.
SNAP! How will they power all these batteries. DAH! Who thought that.......

it's possible.

Power went up here due to the Cost of oil.
if they need more Power they will also Need more Oil
so the cost of both will Rise. Which also means Taxes will Rise .

In a Perfect World 2024 all plans will be erased again.
unfortunately However this world is far from Perfect & Predictable :(

We might as well admit it, "the price of a gallon of gas will never be less than it is today!" The only plan in-place is to promote the demented belief that we will all switch to electric cars!

Could the increase in gas prices be the result of some tinkering by those (State and Feds) who are most adversely affected by the (otherwise) loss of revenue due to EVs?
Don....
the increase of gas prices are from several things. reentry into the Paris climate agreement, the new epa oil and gas rules, the decision to halt new oil and gas leases, closing the keystone pipe line, Allowing energy to be regulated with out consent from congress, The state carbon reduction mandates among other things included in the "infrastructure bill", and the list goes on.......

my Belief ***** would be the Only one willing to reverse all the damage done by the ****** Regime.
however it would be an absolute miracle for him to get past the
**** then as far as doing more then executive orders .
the Oil Companies & The ***** would still be a thorn at Lowering Prices to the Below $3.00 level :(

One thing I Believe I Heard ****** say that I Do agree With.
The Oil Companies are at Fault.
Not as much as He is trying to make us Believe,
But the Oil Companies want Record High Profits at all Costs to the American People. the ******* the ******** & the *****
would help them and Laugh like they are now , before helping us.

If We Americans Lower Our Consumption 50% by Next Year.
Gas will Rise by 60% next year so they can get a New Record.
I Believe once every Thorn is Reversed ,
To lower Prices Americans need to go Back to Gas Guzzlers
and Driving just Because they can. so the oil companies can post record high profits again.

again Oil Companies are in a Prediction & forward Looking Mode.
They need to see a Very Bright Future, Before they Care about us.

Thank you for posting this Jeff! Also, ask these geniuses how the electricity used to charge these cars is generated!
It'll be nuclear and the wheels are already in motion.

I’m all for being responsible stewards of our natural resources, but I highly doubt that the third world countries mine all of the rare metals, that are needed for the batteries, cleaner than we can pump oil here. Not to mention the diesel mining equipment, the pollution from the chemical processes, and the fossil fuels used to actually make the electricity. Its all about who controls the money and power, always has been and always will be.

You can't view the future of technology thru the lens of todays current limitations, it can and will evolve.

Musk and others are already working on non precious metal based batteries as well as working on fast charging batteries(literally minutes). He's a smart man and has smart people working for him, they'll come up with sustainable battery construction types.

Also, enough energy from sun hits the earth in one day to supply all power needs for the entire world for a year and true, we don't currently have the tech to utilize it, but that isn't and won't be permanent calculus. Oil is a finite resource, and even if estimates are grossly off, it will still be significantly used up with the next few hundred years with 8 billion consumers and growing, prices will far outstrip inflation when it becomes scarcer making it untenable for all but niche uses! (like that badass Cobra above!)

Don't get me wrong, i'm a gear head and the "loud pedal" is what stirs me. (i've been drag racing since 1990) Some on here must be unaware though, that the fastest quarter mile times for production cars in the World are now electric cars, a Tesla Plaid and a Nevera. Running low 9's in the quarter mile at 150+mph. 120+ years working on gas cars only to be passed by Elon Musk in 20 years of working on electric cars.

Imagine where we will be in 50 years around the time Elon Musk passes! Imagine if he had been born around 1900 and devoted his life to electric cars where we would be! There were electric cars then, but gas was cheap and plentiful and easy, so any research into electric car was largely abandoned for the next century.
