Encrusted Quartz???

What is encrusted on these crystals and should I leave alone or try to clean. Any advice will be appreciated! Thanks!!

I'd leave it alone. I'd do a hardness test and possibly an acid test on the larger crystal below the sharper finer ones to try and determine what mineral it is. Likely there are two forms of the same mineral crystal present.

Don't clean. Do the tests suggested above. I'm sure I've seen this material before, but can't remember where.
