What can I say :o

We prepared ourselves for the edge of the Roman Site by guessing how many Roman Coins we would find in the 3 hours of sunlight we had left. I guessed 10, Dad said less.

On the very last run we had 7 Roman Coins, quickly I found a further two. Just over the half way point, I got a good signal, knew it was a Roman as soon as I picked it up (very small). Shouted 'Got the 10th one!', until I looked at it & realised it was Silver. I then said, wait on a minute its Silver, Dad guessed Celtic, I said no Saxon & the celebrations began :icon_thumright: I then started my swing again & less than a metre away I got another good signal, now my hearts going & I'm thinking another Saxon Sceat :D But it turned out to be the 10th Roman Coin ;D

Only got my first Saxon Sceat this year & now a 2nd.

10 Roman Coins
2 Tudor Clothes Fasteners (1 lead-alloy type I've never had before)

Early Saxon Penny (Sceat)
Anon.
AD730-40
Female Centaur
Whorl of Wolfs Heads
Less than 50 recorded

Utter surprise :icon_thumright:

Last pictures are a better example, as mine has poor details.

yes where we always start (the finish of our last run), but the prediction for tomorrow is 5 Roman Coins, & no Saxon anything. Other than the Strapend, its a freak find :laughing9:

true but past records show Dec to be a poor month :P

Very cool! Good way to wind up the season!

Nice one Cru :icon_thumright:.
But the year isn't over yet. Ive just got a small 5 acre rough ploughed field about 150-200 meters from the one you were on. And It's all Mine (maniacal evil laugh follows). ;D.
Love the sceat though :headbang:.

Small populations at the time, many were melted down for later coinage etc. Plus as you point out, I'm not in the best area for these but I'm close to many Saxon Villiages. This type they have no clue who was the King/Chiefien or even where it was minted. The 46 that are record of this type, are just that, the ones recorded by responsible metal detector users. A rough calculation of the numbers found is x10, so about 500-600 in existence. :icon_thumright:

NB. This is 8th Century, the beginning of coinage after the so called 'dark ages' when no coins were minted at all in the UK.

This ones very rough as well, but when needs must you just have to hit it. Our plan is to go back over the site with our big coils when he has rolled it flat & pick up the deeper ones or the ones we missed. The beauty of GPSing is we can do this in a very targeted fashion, its invaluable in a large field like this one with only a relatively small site spread across it. You won't have this problem as you will be able to grid the whole field in 4 days without missing anything out 8)
