End to a scabbard?

Went out on my first MD hunt today. I was hunting on a friend property in Middleburg VA and came across this about 8in down. I washed the off some of the dirt and it's hollow in the middle. My guess is that it's the end of a scabbard for a sabre.
What do you think?

I've never seen a scabbard drag that looks quite like that. Looks more like a shovel (or other tool) with the blade rotted or worn off. The handle would go in the hollow end. A picture of that end would determine if it is a shovel at least. Been wrong before though...
