Had a scarce WW2 patch on ebay, 18 watchers from only 56 views, worth $150 but no one bidding it in at $70, so I ended that sucker. Probably some snipes set, but if you didn't want it bad enough to bid it in, sorry.

I have seen it before - a lot of watchers on a desirable item but no bids means that everyone goes to sleep and someone steals it for the opening bid. Not this time. I'll relist it in a couple of weeks, see if the buyers have a better attitude then, lol.

what patch did you have ? I came across some thing my mom made me in 1958 .My dad was in the army and we were stationed in germany. Dad collected patchs and she sewed some on a little gi uniform jacket, and 2 of those wool covers the army used in cold countrys. I do not know what happened to the blankets but my mom did hold on to the jacket and gave it to me when she was moving after my dad passed from cancer caused by agent orange.

A tank battalion patch. You should see what yours are worth, especially since you know they are not reproductions. But I would never sell them if it were me!

I already have a message from an ebayer asking what happened to the item. I checked his feedback and he sells patches, so he was probably looking to flip mine.

This is a very peculiar attitude to have about selling.

Why didn't you just let it run its course? If you didn't want to let it go for $70, then you should have increased the minimum bid or set a BIN.

Not really sure what you are trying to prove here.

If I had let it run its course, I might have gotten full value, which is probably double my opening bid, but probably not. In my experience, a lot of watchers on a desirable item but no bids many times means that someone steals it for the opening bid. Psychologically, I suspect that most potential bidders think there will be lots of competition, so everyone moves on.

If more ebay sellers ended under-performing auctions early, more buyers would be trained to bid early and sellers as a whole would be better off. I know as a buyer, I kick myself when that thing I really wanted disappears from ebay before I sniped it. Because I could have bid but I wanted the best deal possible.

Increasing the minimum bid or setting a reserve both decrease the number of bidders.

"Trained"... Are you serious?
You cannot force the market to behave the way YOU want it to.

..jerseyben .. I was about to say the same thing you said .. I do not under stand some sellers or buyers..

so your ok with sniping and getting the best deal possible. but its not ok for people to do the same with your auctions. i would suggest that you give up on auctions and put everything up as a buy it now to get the price you want.

I never bid till the last moment, I set my snipe bid to the max it is worth to me and it is exercised with 4 seconds left in auction.

I personally see no need to bid early, it just drives the prices up... If item is pulled early oh well, always something else to spend my money on.

I can, and I will. I have reduced supply in the face of demand, and now the price will increase. Period.

Markets behave the way the people who run them want them to behave. For example, since I'm working on my benefits today, we have a health care market in which we pay more for less medical care than we would in any other country in the world. We ARE that market -- and we have been trained to not only accept this screwing, but indoctrinated in the falsehood that we're getting the world's best care.

Anyway, so I buy my meds in Canada on their market at 1/10 of the price I'd pay here in our market.

As a good car salesman if it's just luck that causes him to make more money than the guy across the street, or if there might be some 'training' of the market going on. Ask a stock broker what happens when there's an IPO.

Markets are imperfect, inefficient, irrational, and controlled by psychology when they're not being influenced.

I personally hate it when sellers do this. I wish ebay would put a no pull early clause when you list it. If it happened like this at a live auction like i go to.....the auctioneer would get lynched. I reread the post and realized you aren't asking for advise or opinions on this. That leads me to believe you figure it's not right and you were looking to see how everyone else felt about it. Chalk me up in the "Don't Like" category. My 2 cents.

That is how i do it also i bid the last minute ...

most of my sales happen at the last minute, and im usually surprised more often than disappointed at the price i get for my items. i always start my auctions at the least im comfortable in letting something go. and have never ended an auction early, even if i get offers to end early i tell them to bid.

when i find an item i want i put it in my watch list and bid towards the end.

A lot of those watchers aren't even potential buyers, but other sellers interested in knowing the selling price.

Without knowing exactly what the item was I can't make a specific comment about the value. There are items that have a high value but a relatively low demand. Those type items MUST be listed at the lowest dollar figure the seller is willing to accept. The probability that 2 buyers will be in the market at the same time makes the risk of running an auction too high. On a side note, anyone that believes they can control the market for items on ebay either lacks an understanding of the size of the market, controls a large percentage of the supply of a certain item(s)......or is delusional.

I got most my best finds on Ebay sniping stuff...I understand what you are talking about, but maybe not let everyone on this site know about it..lol

I'm a last minute bidder too.

I rarely run auctions on my listings. There is just too much risk.

It's only a risk if you list it for less than you would be willing to sell it for. Other than that there is no risk involved.
