ENJOY WORKING THE AREA WITH IT'S HISTORY

Not much today. Out hunting old farm fields for
remains of farms. (but I would take a cannon ball
if I tripped over it) ;)

But……
It is a very interesting area. The first photo is the area I was working. This hilltop was the site of a fort built by the French during the 1600’s. (Several cannon balls were found just north of this location in the 1960’s during road construction.). However there is no record
of any type of military action in the area.

Also, in the 1830’s, visitors to the area found what were apparently earthworks fortifications on the bluffs overlooking what was then the Sag Swamp. (a canal was built which took care of most of the swamp area).

I was hunting for remains from the farms, but you never know what you could find. (The photo is just one field the last farmer,
I think his name was Lucas, worked. There are about 5 other sections just like what is pictured; open, wood, open, woods.)

Did come across one dump and dug for about an hour an a half, 6 bottles, 50’s early 60’s, did not take them. Moved on, found another promising area but it was getting late and I got the GPS location and will return.

Dug this thermometer at the first location, note the readings, any ideas? It’s broke, small amount of mercury still in tip and main section.

Not much on finds, but it was a good hunt.

all have a good un.......

Re: NOT MUCH - BUT ENJOY WORKING THE AREA WITH IT'S HISTORY

Soounds like some good exploring. I think a lot of us don't do enough recon...we just start swinging when we get out there. Taking a day to size up the area is a great idea.

The readings on the thermometer are puzzling...looks more like something for specific gravity...

centigrade...

Delkab has it right as for Centigrade but not much of a range. Another pic to compare.

Looks like maybe a European doctor's or vet thermometer

I was thinking Celsius but what threw me off was the fact that America didn't really use that back then (did we?).I forgot about the fact that it could have been brought over by a European immigrant or actually mail ordered or something.Cool deal.BTW-awesome looking site SHERMANVILLE.Nothing like that around here for a 100 miles at least.

Re: ENJOY WORKING THE AREA WITH IT'S HISTORY

SHERM, Looks Like A Promising Site, Congrats And Good Hunting. trk5capt...

Re: ENJOY WORKING THE AREA WITH IT'S HISTORY

37 celsius appears to be marked in red on there? That is human body temp. That could also explain why the thermometer has such a narrow range.

Some animals also have nearly the same body temp as we do, some a little higher.
