Ernest Meuller's lost garden,Ironbark tennis club and the New chum Mine [1855]
Ernest Meuller was a german miner how came to Sandhurst in the spring of 1855 and settled in the german area and had a gold claim at Victoria Hill. Numerous Germans had aquired their share of wealth from the alluvial gold rush and by 1855 where investing in deep quartz mines which where to produce wealth far past that of the alluvial.Ernest Meuller and few other germans started the New Chum Mining Company and had stakes in Hussler mining Company too.The 2 companys owned 74 mines and 7 large crushing batteries and employed about 850 men. These two mining companies mined gold for nearly 80 years and the last Mine "New Chum Extended" still produced 70,000 oz gold in the last years of the 1920's.The set price of gold, ground water problems, loss of life in the great war brought about the end of these Companies.
Ernest Meuller was the Mayor of Sandhurst in 1880's and involved in many other projects. One such was the building of the Ironbark Tennis Club.which was not completed until after his death in 1904
Ernest meuller had a garden built at the rear of his house in 1873.More like a park, the garden took up 10 acres and imported trees and quartz pebble paths where a part of this.
All these sites are located on oneside of a hill and on the every top was Valintines Power Factory.Well the building is still there and some small heeps from the mine remain and the tennis club is still there but theres not much of his garden left and useless you can see whats in my pics.
Most of the land around the hill is considered unstable and not used for any thing.
i made about 4 trips here this week and found some really interesting relics
