Error Coin? (PICS ADDED!!!)

Found a 1996P quarter without the reeded edge. My first thought was that it was worn down, however, considering the coin is only 6 years old and there is not even a hint of the reeded edge, I am thinking it was never there. Anyone ever heard of this type of error?

Here are some pictures of the quarter. The first one is the 96P, the second one is a 66 on top of the 96P, to show comparison of possible wear and tear over the years. Still doesn't look normal to me. Check them out and let me know what you guys think

Maybe you need to compare the diameter with the reeded one to see if someone actually ground the edge off on the one you found.

The quarter is at home, I will check it tonight when I get home from work. Why would someone ground the edge off anyway?

I usually hear about the edges being ground down although broad strikes happen. I have a penny that mis struck, with 1/2 an image.

Usually cost about $1.00 to $ 2.00 on ebay for smooth edges on coins, unless rare

But i would recommend looking under magnification on the edges for file marks.

Either way i save my error coins all the time.

Sounds more like a casino coin to me......a quarter (or half) reeding will get flattened over time by the sheer number of times it hits the metal tray on the slot machine.

I found one of those today in my change, no kidding! It was a 1985, but I had a few 70's ones too and they still had the reeded edge. I just figured someone was screwing around and used it..

I know people used to shave the edges off of the silver quarters because they could melt down the silver accumulated off several coins. That's why they started putting the reeded edges on them. At least that's what some guy on the history channel said...got a whole brain crammed with useless trivia like that.

I find them all the time in halves. Saw four or five in one roll! I dunno what causes this, other than the collar breaking or being in a slot machine for a long time. Anyone else got any ideas?

That looks like many halves I have found, in which some were only a few years old. Casino coin, 99% sure.

Reminds me of a double-stuffed Oreo! I'd hold onto it
