Hi all,

I have a problem with the thread part of my batteries cracking?
I have contacted the dealer who has said it is covered by the warranty so no probs there, just a pain in the @$#.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Sorry for your problem. I have not heard of any problems with the batteries like this cracking. Let us know how it goes......

happens all the time

if u do not tighten up that battery knob tight, water gets in.................bingo

or if the gasket falls off and u do not see it........................................bingo

water and electricity do not like each other

Thanks Max......

Another reason to use silicone grease on the threads or the battery to seal out the water.

That seal was never intended to keep the water out- you should only be tightening it finger tight - DC
voltage will work even if it were flooded completely - It looks to me like someone overtighten it or
dropped it and they were'nt soaking it it fresh water hence the corrosion on the contacts - If it were
meant to be sealed completely it would have a o-ring seal - I was a Cavediver for ten years and know
all about underwater equipment such as lighting and scooters , used to rebuild all of my own dive gear
and these detectors are very simple compared to that type of equipment - they do recommend that you
put silicone grease on the plug pins periodically to help reduce the levels of electrolysis between the
two pins on the plug - Cavedweller

The only problem that i had& have is disconnecting it from the pod. The male connector is so tight that you try to wiggle it a little an pull i got a small hair line crack. This is on the excal 2 no problems at all on the other excalls. COTTON.

Cavedweller, should a person put silicon grease on the pins from the headphones to the box or the coil to the transducer? I imagine these things to be just like a depth finder on a boat, or a very close facsimile of them. I've always put silicone on the pins of my vhf, my gps, and my depth finder., never had a problem with corrosion.

Yeah that would definitely help -when you have dissimilar metals you have the potential for electrolysis
across the two pins and contacts on the battery and don't forget to rinse off with fresh water if used in
salt water - I have a plastic 55 gallon drum that I soak my stuff in for a couple of minutes to insure that
my detector will last for years because really just rinsing is good but soaking is better to get rid of that
nasty salt water - Cavedweller

Good to know, this may sound stupid but, do you just let it sit in the drum of water or kinda give it a ,,,,,, bath? I know for my fishing (SW) reels they make a spray and liquid you can mix with water that dissolves? salt from metal.

Yeah I put it in and slosh it around about a minute just so I know the salt crystals will not form and let
it dry and your good to go Joe L - Cavedweller

Thanks for the replys and advise.
gravediggermax that looks the same as mine but I dont have the corrosion.
Do you replace the thread on the batteries yourself or do you send it in for repair?

Yes, very good info, thanks. JOe

I throw mine in the jacuzzi ;D ;D ;D guzz1

Finders keepers, my excal. battery cracked on the threads to. I sent it back [warantee covered it.] I asked the repair guy about it and he said I probably droped it. I'm REEL careful with my stuff and I didn't drop it. Now I noticed my back up battery is cracking at the threasds to. I,m sure Minlab knows they have a problem, but are not addressing it. What the#%.. :tard: Mike.

Not diving any more? I love them caves going back the weekend of the 10th of July to the Lurraville area. Hopefully P1 is cleared up ;D

Hey Mike,

Must agree, never droped mine, very carefull with it. There must be a problem there end.
My back up has signs of it happening also....not happy :(

Hey Butch - I decided to quit cave diving but don't get me wrong I loved the sport but years of carrying
those doubles on my back and all the other gear , scooter , video, deco bottles took it toll on my back
and also two of my buddies died up in Eagles nest , so I gave it up - still have all my open water gear
- Hope you have fun because it is a beautiful way to spend a day but please be careful the caves are
very unforgiving - dry caves are really cool too but metal detecting is where it at - Cavedweller

Cavedweller, Yes I do understand about the carrying the gear...I am not a spring chicken myself. I went through my class with a hernia ;D I told my Dr it would have to wait. And I too have lost good friends to the sport. They weren't in a cave but none the less diving. I am glad I didn't take this when I was younger because I pobably would have been foolish :icon_jokercolor: Now I just do the simple dives and I know they are just as dangerous but I still respect them. Do you still live in the area? If so maybe we could meet at Floyd's when I am down there.
