I have an 8 year old blue Excal 1000 ( a few years before the Excal II came out )
The outer jacket of the wire to the coil is split in 2 places and needs to be replaced. In the mean time I wrapped it with electrical tape, then a waterproof Band-aid, then another layer of electrical tape. ( Yes I put a Band-aid on it! )
Can I get a replacement cable and install it myself or would it be better to bring it over to Kellyco and have them change it out?

Thanks for any advice, I am sure others here have run into this.

I have the same Xcal and had the same problem. Kco replaced the coil, Don't think they will replace just the wire. You should also have the control O-rings replaced also. At least you will save shipping...Figure @$300 for new 10" coil and rings

Please feel free to contact our repair facility. I spoke with:icon_thumleft: Barry:icon_thumright: and we can take care of the issue you are having with the Excal

If you have never opened the machine before I would advise sending it to Kellyco.

If your on a budget it's not real hard but not for the weak hearted. Will cost you about 30 dollars to do yourself..

The older coils use the 5 wire and the newer the 4 wire...

Thank you for that OBN, The breaks in the jacket are along the length of the cable ( just found 3 more ) but the connectors are fine. I was thinking of cutting the cable off 6 inches from each connector, splicing in a new cable, then sealing it with heat shrink. If all the cable is suspect because it is old, it may be best just to replace both cables and be done with it. What do you think?

It is best to have it professionally repaired. I also have the older blue and had an Excal II. I think the Ole Blue was deeper and more sensitive. Maybe mine was just blessed.

I have done similar for a temp fix, it just seems in time that gives away also. If you can swing the 300 I would go that way with Kellyco. If not I am here always and Happy to answer any questions that you may need. Even a phone call if you need. If you do splice the cables I used rescue tape a long with aqauseal to fix them. I think the last patch job I did lasted a few months...it was my own and a patched on a coil connector...

Where there's a will,... OBN has a way!
Nice repair!

You just cant beat a Mel Parker fix. Mine went...... i got a used Sov coil. If the cable casing is bad.... its all bad and will break somewhere else. Bite the bullet ..... swap the coil out and you shouldnt have to worry about it any more. Kelleyco does good work and they can go thru it and do a pressure test while they have it.

Sandman you are right the blue i have is a good little machine and i prefer the Sov coil on it over the slimline.

Thanks all, I'll bring it back to Kellyco and see what other maintenance may be needed, and get any available upgrades like the pinpoint switch or Grey Ghost headphones.

Kellyco is authorized Minelab repair center, they will repair any part on the Blue Excal 1000/800.

Had the same issue on my Excal Blue 1000. Dave (Lost Item Recovery) fixed mine like brand new.

I think the route cause of the problem we are all having is UV degradation of the plastic in the wire jacket. I see no UL listing or manufacturers number on the cable. Many cables designed for outdoor use, such as those commonly used for cable television, have additives in the jacket to block UV which breaks down plastic. If possible I would like to upgrade to a more robust cable. The other option would be to protect the cable with a shield layer. For my theatrical lighting I use a heat shield over the wires. It is a tube of woven material that protects the cable from the high heat of the lamps and prevents nicks and scratches when in transit. This would block the sun and protect from impact damage. It would be best to put it over the cable before the connectors are attached.
Can anyone with an Excal II tell me if there is any labeling on the cable ?
