Mike, are you hunting fresh or salt water? I hunt in the salt. I set my volume on high, threshold just barely audible, discriminate on 1-2(just barely on to null out any iron), and sensitivity around 12-1 o'clock. Seems to work for me. Good luck and let us know how you do!

Hello Mike, I set mine about where Surfrat sets his Excal too, except I set my sensitivity just off AUTO for max. depth. Some areas you can't use this setting.

You might want to start out just hunting with a Sensitivity setting in AUTO till you learn the sounds.

Hello and thanks to all the suggestions
Thanks Alot Mike

Sandman, do you set your sensitivity just off AUTO in salt water? I get a lot of falseing/chatter setting it that low in the ocean.

Hello Again, I went out with my excalibur and this is the only problem which is a big one i think. The threshhold never stays steady either is goes quiet for awhile or it changes sound from which i read changing sounds is normal. I adjusted the sensitivity many times and still nothing, I am finding things up high even with these problems. I think because of this prolbem with threshhold i cant anything deep. An help would be greatly appreciated. Also pinpointing help.
Thanks Mike

NJMIKE, the threshold will never stay steady, as you describe it. The silence that you are hearing is the iron masking. Set the threshold at just above the point you can barley hear it, and leave it be until you gain more experience. You need to plant yourself a metal garden of gold, silver, aluminum, and any other metals you can think of, and get yourself used to the different tones associated with each. These are the tones you are looking to hear. A lot of the other noise is just that, noise, frequency changes etc. For me aluminum still sounds like gold.
Follow the recommended settings in your owners manual, and get out there and practice. It will take some time, you will sometimes get a little frustrated with it, but just keep at it and you will get the hang of it.

Surfrat, I set my sensitivity just off Auto in most cases. In some places you have to turn her down like you said. I used to think salt water was salt water, but alot depends on the content of salt, currents, freshwater runoff, rivers, etc. You gotta play it by ear........Pun not intended.

I should have made myself more clear. As my ears get older I don't recognize all the different sounds like I used to be able. Now if it almost makes a sound, I dig.
