Excalibur 8" or 10"

Lets here the pros and cons. I plan on using it as a water machine. Chest/Waist deep into the wet sand. More or less in or on the water. Probably very little dry sand.
Thanks in advance

Bigger is better. I took off my 10 inch coil and wired in a 15 inch WOT coil on my Excal. You will go deeper with a larger coil and you have a wider sweep, the only reason I would use an 8 inch coil is if there was lots of trash which you usually don't have in the water. The Excal nulls on small pieces of iron which eliminates iron trash.........Go with at least a 10 inch coil....

If you are on a surf beach with turbulence I would recommend using the smaller coil. For general detecting in calm waters I would go for the 10inch. Using a 15 inch Wot coil in any current is hard work, you will have a real battle on your hands. I gave up using a 15inch wot coil because of this it was just too hard. I use the 10 inch it still punches down deep and is very sensitive to small targets, also is less likely to suffer interference which the 15 inch is prone to in the water. seeya Neilo

Re: Excalibur 8" or 10"

I was going to get a WOT coil installed on my Excal to replace the 10" but never got around to it. Now I only hunt freshwater with the Excal 1000 and the thought of holding up a WOT scares me. Maybe the butterfly would be better. By all means think of the coverage you get per sweep.

Re: Excalibur 8" or 10"

I guess some hunters may have a problem with the WOT in the water, but for me there is no problem at all. I have been using the WOT coil to hunt in the surf for well over a 18 months now, to me it is as easy to use as the 10 inch as far as the drag in the water. I know other hunters who also use it in the water as well with no problems.

If the surf is exceptionally rough then it may be a problem, I hunt Daytona Beach regular and the surf there is not calm most times and even though I have an Excal with the 10 inch with me at all times, my coil of choice is still the WOT. You can just cover so much more area with it and it goes so much deeper then the 10 inch..

I hunt with the harness, which greatly helps, I use the harness hunting land or water. No matter what coil you chose, I highly recommend you use the harness, I can hunt all day with no arm pain when I use the harness, now leg pain, well that is another story........

The SEF Butterfly 15" x 18" is heavier, but I do use it as well. The harness really helps with it................Maybe when I am older the big coils in the water will bother me more, but I right now I am only 61 .... ;D

Good luck and good hunting............
