I purchased a Excal II this summer and have had more success than ever before. I have one question that has been a problem lately. When I am hunting in shallow water( 1" to 18" or so) I get false signals at the end of my swings. I am still able to determine a good signal from a false one, but, this does make it more difficult and is very confussing and distracting. When I get in deeper water (18" plus) the falsing stop and everthing works fine. I have my SEN on Auto and my DISC on 3 to 5. I have tried a higher DISC setting (7) with no improvement. Does anyone know what is causing this?? All suggustions appriecated! Help, Sincerely JimmyK.

Some Excals don't have this falsing in the shallow water and some do. It may be your area has a little more black sand in the shallows that the detector responds to.

I don't use Auto Sens. but as much as I can with out falsing and this depends on the beach. Zero Disc also helps with Threshold very low where you can barely hear it. Helps to cover the phones drain holes with tape to knock out the wind noise so you can lower the threshold even lower. Also do not raise the coil off the sand at the end of the swing, keep it level.

I would follow Sandmans suggestions. I set the sense to where it is stable, anywere between Auto and 3'oclock on the dial, I adjust till it is stable. I use no discrimination. You will discriminate out some gold using descrimination that high. Let the nulling tell you if it is iron, dig all other targets. Do you really want to skip a really nice gold ring, thinking it is a pull tab.......

Thanks Sandman and Treasure_Hunter for the help!! Will try advise this afternoon. I live in northern Minnesota and the season is about over but I can't stop using the EXCAL II. Was in the lake yesterday and got my first V nickel. Also got a War nickel and a wheatie and 30 modern coins. I may be the only water hunter still hunting in my neck of the woods, but the winters are long and need to get in all the hunting I can.

As a side note to praise the EXCAL II, I have been land hunting for over 15 years and this is my third year of water hunting(first 2 years with a Fisher 1280x) In the past found 1 gold ring(2 with diamonds). Since getting my EXCAL II I have found 9 gold rings, my first Morgan, Buffalo nickel, V nickel, saq $ and over 1200 coins. My total ring count for the summer stands at 73 compared to my previous high of 22. Hope to post some pics later. Again thanks for the help and let you know how it works out. Sincerely, JimmyK

UPDATE:

Thanks again for the help you guys!! I set the Disc at 0 and the Sens at about mid range. Threshold was stable and no falsing. I was able to search the shallow areas where I had trouble before. Found lots of trash(foil and pull tabs mostly) but was able to pull out 2 gold rings and 44 coins. Had a great day. It was sunny and 50 degrees and the water temp was about the same. My joins really hurt after 5 hours in the cold water so I think the is the end of my water hunting for the years. I will have all winter to look forward to using my EXCAL II using manual SENs. Just want to say thanks again and to let you know that Thursday was my 52nd birthday. Thanks for the great Bday present!!
Sencerely, JimmyK. PS. I hope your finds are many and that maybe some day our paths will cross. Good Luck.

Jimmy,

Happy birthday and I hope you have many more. Glad it worked for you, you can never go wrong with Sandman's advice..

You might think of looking for a used wetsuit sometime, it will extend your hunting season some. Even though I live in Forida, the water temperature in the Atlantic gets really cold at times. I use a 3.5 mm farmer john wetsuit I picked up used for $35 and have hunted in the surf when the water temperatures were in the high 40's and was quite comfortable. combined it is 7mm over the torso...

I will be 60 the 14th of this month.

good luck and good hunting.........

Treasure Hunter,

I was using a wetsuit. Actually I used a shorty suit all summer as the lakes never did get as warm as usual. Then I switched to my full length suit a week ago. It really helps other wise maybe 1/2 hour at a time would be all I could hunt. I was hunting barefoot and have been thinking about getting a pair of the diving bootys. Do you have any experience with them? If they work as well as the wet suit it would be of great help. Thanks, JimmyK

Good to see you use the wetsuit. Yes I have a pair of diving boots and they work as well as the suit. The only problem with my boots is they are soft sole, so my feet get tired after a few hours. I need to invest in a pair of hard sole diving boots...

Good luck and good hunting on your return............

I've used the dive booties and the fishing wader shoes that you wear over stocking foot waders. These work very well as they are easy on and off an can be worn walking long distances. It helps lots to check them out to not get any with brass brads in the construction as they affect the Excal, CZ20, Tiger Shark and a lot of others to make you go on "point" thinking you heard a target. :icon_scratch:
