I was just wondering if any of you guys or girls hunt without the coil cover on? Will it hurt anything? It seems more of a pain to me than if it wasn't on there. It gets alot of trapped sand in there every 10 min or so then it causes falsing. :dontknow: I find myself pulling it off alot. I understand its probally on there to protect wear to the coil, but I really just wonder if it's even necessary. :help: Thanks in advance.....Rob

All my explorer coils went well before they would have worn through, so personally it's not something I would worry about.

Thanks Iron Patch, appriciate the helpful input. Thats what I would figure, after my 1 year warrenty is up I will just be spraying it with the rubberized coating anyway. HH

i just dont understand??? iv had over 100 detectors of all makes and models..hunted fresh water lakes and now live at the ocean on the east coast.i hunt with Sovereign's and Excal's and CZ20/21..i have NEVER had to remove a coil cover for this false signals due to sand under the coil cover????

Im not sure I get falsing alot from time to time on my excalibur II, but not on my excalibur 1000. Everytime i get it there is sand between the coil and cover. I take the cover off put it back on and it goes away for a short time. The cover has a small crack in the side. Not sure how it happened. I'm wondering if i have a faulty coil. No clue, I'm a nubey with the detectors. :dontknow: The detector is only a month or so old though. I'll call kellco and ask.

As I understand it the Excal II was advertised as being more sensitive and this could be the trouble. My Excal 1000 only has this falsing once in awhile and there is sand in the cover. I used to apply bathtub caulk around the crack where the cover joins the coil but black sand still go in through a gap. If the detector is out of warranty it is a good idea to coat the bottom and edges with a Marine Epoxy. This saves the coil from abrasions on the edge where it is weakest. It is a lot cheaper than buying a new coil.

Thanks Sandman & Digger, appriciate the help and reply. It very well could be just the differences between the two machines and me not being experienced yet. The 1000 seems easy to use and I actually prefer it, but the Excalibur II doesnt constantly false and sometimes especially on dry sand goes a long time before I get a falsing...But it seems when I am in the water it falses fairly often. It might just be a matter of having to change sensitivity or I am hitting black sand in areas. Mabey I'm totally wrong about the sand under the coil, it was just my thought... :dontknow:

Mine would do it in rough water, every time a wave crashed, it would false... At first my heart would stop thinking I had a good signal, but then there would be nothing there... Finally figured out it was falsing... Turned sens down to 6 (from 8) and it still did it... I just kinda got used to it and ignored it, but had to send it in for service anyway, so we'll see what it does when it comes back...

hello, slim line coil is made by covering coil copper wires by epoxy, if you hunt allot on send, send will little by little send this epoxy off till the wires, that is why is needed coil cover, but in reality you have to hunt allot for make a real impact. my suggestion try to hunt without until you will get if its coil cover makes problem, but after put it back with silicon. good luck
