Primary Interest:
Metal Detecting
Hi all , I have recently been given an old Excalibur sword in not working condition .I have got working but it seems i cant discriminate between iron and gold / silver . Even the sound is the same . What switch should i replace or be looking at first ? it Weighs a ton but i know it has potential . I am sick of digging up iron . I am desperate to find more coins so any help will be welcomed . Thank Gaz

It sounds like you have it set to all metal (pinpoint) mode. Excal only gives tone on iron if it is in pinpoint mode or the iron is so large it overloads the detector. Normal response for iron is a null (loss of the threshold tone as it passes over the iron.

Check your setting for PP/ Threshold and be sure it is set to threshold...

Thanks TH , I still can't get it to discriminate .Its all or nothing by the look of it . I am thinking it may need another switch . But what one . Gaz

The descrimination/pinpoint switch I would guess. How does it act when you turn it? It should be a short turn between the two settings. It should not keep turning..

OBN has great videos on YouTube on how to disassemble and reassemble the main control. You may be able to remove just the top endcap to visually inspect the small shaft that fits down in the switch to see if it is out of the slot it fits in or broken off. It can be a little difficult to remove main board but not too bad If your a little bit of a "techie" and can follow video instructions.

BOOM ! There we have it . I was given this machine not working . I have had it apart many times . Since given this little bit of info . I looked at the dics/pinpoint switch and realised I had it wrong . Now it is working . It still sounds on metal but nulls when under coil. When I do this with a coin it screams all the way . Man , am I happy for a freebie. Thanks again guys , your help and info has helped me repair the old girl . Gaz

I have been in touch with OBN and he is very up to speed with these detectors . He sent me a heap of links and they helped greatly . Thnks guys . Gaz
