Hello all.
As we age, we get comfortable in our daily routines. Complacency sets in. Not good.
A metal "detectorist" needs to be fit. Many sites have been pounded and reaching the proverbial "virgin" site takes strength and fortitude. It may also take cardio and weight training. Not just for detecting, but for a healthy lifestyle.
My diet? Most won't agree with.
Breakfast - 1 banana , 2 if necessary.
Lunch - 1 protein shake.
Dinner - is always home cooked and plentiful. Yup, I enjoy "red meat". I use it as a tasty side dish though. Steamed veggies with minimal seasoning are the majority of my plate. Fish and rice at least once a week. Eggs, I keep to a minimum.
Most of us over 40 have unused home exercise equipment. Free weights, resistance machines, stationary bikes, treadmills, etc. Give 'em another try. Moderately initially and move up gradually.
You will see your energy levels grow respectively.
Sweating can be good...
GL
Peace ✌
P.S. Always consult your health care providers before beginning an exercise routine.

I do just about the opposite of you. I eat a big breakfast, maybe a sandwich for dinner and very little supper which I try to eat around 4 or 5. I get plenty of exercise in just day to day activities. And you are right, sweating is good for you. Almost 290 pounds 2 months ago down to 274 now. I know that is not much but you got to start somewhere...d2

Well done d2!
Whatever works individually.
No pain no gain...
Peace ✌

I'll drink to that :occasion14:

Thanks digging440yrs.
I'm sure 12oz curls help. ;)
Peace ✌

Words of wisdom, CK. My diet is much like yours, but now I need to kick in some cardio and weights. As far as rice and bananas though, I follow the Paleo Diet philosophy, so starchy stuff is a minimum - two or three times a month, and usually reserved for when we eat out or when visiting relatives and friends. Btw, Paleo made me lose 75 lbs in one year, and I ate like a pig (at least it seemed that way) the whole time.

Well while y'all are settin around probably contemplatin the value of this or that fiber, I have an actual job which pretty much provides me with all the exercise I need.

And there are NO fat people workin on the overnight crew here. (you know, they might have been fat when they started?)

In addition to my diet and exercise, I get a lot for a retired guy, I have started riding a bike. That helps also...d2

Thanks RGINN, but there ain't no sittin' round contemplatin' here.
Just saying, a daily routine hurts no one.
Peace ✌
P.S. I apologize for the aforesaid double negative. ;)

I'm of the opinion now that I'm nearing 60 , that good health is real treasure in this life ! A nice balance between diet ,
and cardio , and resistance training is very good .

Yeah but were does beer fit into this? Is it a food group? I think they should make SENIOR BEER> like it could have soluble fiber in it. :icon_scratch: Hmmm... maybe that's NOT a good idea. Beer makes me pretty regular anyway. :laughing7:

Beer fits in fine, as long as it's in moderation. I just dropped a stone in weigh over the last six weeks, no fast diet just healthy eating and cutting down on the sugar intake. Plenty of fruit and vegetables, and a cheat once a week, beer on a weekend only.
Can't wait for the harvest I'll be like a spring chicken around them fields.:laughing7:

Well , I think beer is part of a healthy diet , maybe two or three a day (only if you have considerable experience !)

No disrespect intended to our brothers and sisters out there who are in recovery programs of any kind .

If two or three make you healthy, I'm reeealy healthy. ;)
Peace ✌

I'm 6'3", 56 years old, 175 lbs.

Bowl of Cheerios and whatever fruit is available for breakfast (raisins are a fallback most seasons). On the weekends - eggs. We have about 40 chickens so eggs are pretty much a must-go commodity.

Lunch is leftovers (at work in the microwave) or an egg salad sandwich on locally baked bread. We don't buy "white bread".

I drink coffee (black) and water during the day. Occasionally a lemonade for supper. No soda.

Supper is whatever THE ADMIRAL feeds me. Two beers after that - bottled local "real" beer.

Beer is a surprisingly healthy alcoholic beverage. Despite being high in both carbohydrates and calories, it contains large amounts of B vitamins and some minerals. Beers that contain a lot of hops -- for example, India pale ales -- are rich in kidney health-promoting phytochemicals. Beer is also a source of dietary fiber, with different varieties contributing different amounts to your daily intake. Although you shouldn't rely on beer for its nutritional benefits, one or two beers per day can be part of a healthy diet.

Note that real beer has four ingredients: water, malted barley, hops and yeast. If you have artificial carbonization added or rice or corn products - throw it out! Also - a beer typically has 110 to 120 calories per 12 oz. Less than most sodas. "Lite" beer is just beer plus more water. Better to drink a beer and a glass of water than two "lite" beers.

I don't exercise but have an active life. Hobby farm with sheep & foul. We like to hike, hunt, sail a small boat and bicycle. Keep moving so you can keep moving.

Well done Charlie P.
It's amazing that what works for one person is opposite for another.
Genetics, occupation, lifestyle, metabolism, etc., are all major factors for health.
We can't beat "poppa time", but we sure can avoid him a bit longer.
Peace ✌
