Exp XS - Crack in back of control housing?

I found an XS for sale with a "crack" in the back of the control housing where the rod attaches - they say it's very common. Is this something that MUST be fixed, or can I live with it. Does it make the rod loose? Is it expensive or can I fix it myself,

I'm leaning toward passing on it, - I haven't seen a picture of the "crack" but if it's in the control housing I assume water and dirt might get in there.

Was a common problem early on and usually you can deal with the loose shaft a while but it definitely has to go in for repair. Probably $40 for the labor (it takes 5 minutes, done it before),and a good talker could probably get the housing for free. Make sure you make it very clear that is the only problem and all you want fixed or they'll try and screw you.
