Ace 250 & Minelab EX2
My question relates to the use of rechargeable batteries, and their use in the alkaline battery holder that came with my EX2.

The manual says to use only the Minelab rechargeable pack (NiMH 1600mAh or 1800mAh), or alkaline batteries in the spare battery holder. Anyone feel like it would be a problem to stuff the alkaline battery holder with rechargeable NiMH batts?

The new Energizer NiMH batteries have a capacity of 2450mAh. Now, I think this is just a measure of total capacity, but is there any danger of harming my detector by using them?

Thanks,

MP

I use 1700mah and I'm getting close to the detecting time of some pretty good alks.. (2 all day hunts) I assume the latest Minelab battery must be similar, I just prefer more single batteries as back up than dealing with a large pack. 2450s should rock.

Thanks for the info Brett and IronPatch. I was talking with another experienced Explorer/E Trac user who cautioned me on the rechargeables. His experience was that they didn't last close to as long as the Minelab 1600mAh pack. His opinion is that its better to spend the $70 on a new minelab pack than the roughly $40-50 for a couple packs of Energizers and the charger.

Not really sure which way I'm going to go, but I appreciate the feedback from everyone.

I've been using an explorer since about 2000, 6 years of which have been with the Minelab battery supplied. (different explorers, several batteries) The powerex 1700 mah I use now easily last longer. Need a deal maker... The Minelab pack takes what 16 hours to fully charge? My powerex charger does all 8 batteries at once, shows each rate of charge, and is done in under an hour! I paid about $80 for the better charger, and $50 or so for 16 batteries. Well worth it! (and not limited to be used by only an explorer)

Informative thread! My question, how do you tell when the factory battery pack is fully charged? :-\

The charger that came with my used EX2 has a red led that is lit as long as its plugged in to the wall, whether or not a battery is connected. As far as I know, the only way to know if its fully charges is to pop it into your machine and check the battery level indicator.

That wouldn't do it either because it would always show full.

Basically to be sure you have a full charge you leave it the number of hours required. This is why I prefer my powerex batts. and hour charger.
