It was by a bizarre but fortunate accident 35 years ago that I found the artifact I'd never even dreamed of finding, oh I'd seen pictures and read about Atlatl weights but no one I knew at the time was aware of anyone ever finding one locally ( Fulton County Illinois).
It was in 1981, I was in the house, the phone rings, I answer it and the voice on the other end says; "hey Kevin" ( but my name is Mark ) " I've been finding some nice little Cahokia bird points in this new field I've been hunting and I'm heading back out there right now, do you want to go with me"? I recognized the voice and replied "hey Bob this Mark just down the street, you must have mistakenly dialed my number, but hey, if Kevin's not interested I'm not doing anything, I'll go with you"! Five minutes later Bob pulls up out front, I jump in the car and we're headed for the field.
Anyone that hunted with Bob quickly learned how he ticked. He would always hunt his best fields alone a few times and after he thought he'd combed them over pretty good he'd invite someone else to go back with him ( nothing wrong with that), but once you got to the field he'd point to the areas where he'd found all his goodies hoping you'd walk that direction so he could sneak over by himself to where he'd "really" been finding the artifacts.
So the hunt began, it was only a 10-12 acre field and I don't know how many times Bob had already hunted the field but the surface was soft and was lucky to was walk ten steps without seeing his old boot prints in the dirt!
After an hour or so of nothing but Bobs footprints I headed toward the bluff edge of the field and as I walked over the middle of a natural mound-like knob formation there it lay, the hole face of one side fully exposed, WOW! I was literally singing praises to the MOST HIGH! Bob on the other hand was yelling TODDER YOU LUCKY B***TARD over and over!
We remained friends for years, if he was a little bitter about me walking away with the prize it never showed. The amazing thing is, several years later Bob took a high school classmate of mine out to a field for his first go at artifact hunting, Bob had already hunted that field several times prior also. When they got to the field Bob started feeding my old classmate the same old BS sandwich about where he'd been picking up nice artifacts. Ron, not knowing Bob was feeding him a BS story headed out into the field where he'd been directed, meanwhile Bob slowly sneaks off in another direction to where he'd really been halving some luck. When they met back up at the car a couple hours later Ron pulled a large blade out of his jacket pocket and asked Bob if it was a good one. Here's a picture of what he was holding... "Did you find all of the artifacts in the pictures?"
IN MY DREAMS!!! Only the one in the center was found by me.
It's pictured there in the Bill Brockman collection,
which contains many fine artifacts and one the best in the nation as to the finest Bannerstones.
Here's a few more pictures... ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459098072.203294.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459098112.103531.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459098140.671857.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459098167.092068.jpg ImageUploadedByTreasureNet.com1459098197.592529.jpg
