"FARM CLEARING SALE, I PURCHACED A 1877 RIFLE [POLICE ISSUE]"

Hi all,I worked away for a couple of days, at a place called Cohuna.Cohuna is a rural country town and is about a 100 miles from home.We finished the work early so i went to a Farm clearing sale. These old farms have so much great stuff.I spotted this 1877 Colony of Victoria Government police issue rifle. The rifle is a 450 cal. henry martini 1877.I believe i got for a real cheap price but i didn,t have enough money left to buy any of great old relics for sale.No licence is required to own such guns. :D :D :D I real happy with my find , i mean purchace. lol

Great job on the purchase. I too have never seen a gun that old before. For being that old, it looks like it is in beautiful shape. Glad your home.

Re: "FARM CLEARING SALE, I PURCHACED A 1877 RIFLE [POLICE ISSUE]"

That is awesome TP! They used those a lot in the Boer War of South Africa 1899-1900, I have a few shot casings from a Henry Martini Enfield. I would think those are very expensive to buy and a serious collectors item. Beautiful rifle and HH, Mike

click for more images A Good Martini Henry Rifle A British MkII Martini Henry The most famous British Infantry breech loading rifle of the 19th century. As used in the film ZULU, the type used during the Zulu War, a very nice example. The Martini-Henry was a breech-loading lever-actuated rifle adopted by the British, combining an action worked on by Friedrich von Martini (based on the Peabody rifle developed by Henry Peabody), with the rifled barrel designed by Scotsman Alexander Henry. It first entered service in 1871 replacing the Snider-Enfield, and variants were used throughout the British Empire for 30 years. It was the first British service rifle that was a true breech-loading rifle using metallic cartridges. During the Martini-Henry period in service, the British army were involved in a large number of colonial wars, most notably the Anglo-Zulu War in 1879. The rifle was used by the company of the 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot present at Rorke's Drift during the eponymous battle. The weapon was not completely phased out until 1904. However, the Martini-Henry did see service in WWI in a variety of roles primarily as a Reserve Arm, but it was issued (in the early stages of the war) to aircrew for attempting to shoot down observation ballons and other aircraft, presumably as it had a much larger bore than the general issue current service rifle the .303 SMLE.

Hi all, thanks for the replies.Yes these rifles were used by the british army for a period but the rifle i have has 2 round stamps on the wooden butt."VIC Gov" which is the Victorian Colony of Australia and not the Victorian Gov of Britain. The last British regiment left australia in 1875.These fifles were purchased from the British for Australian Gold troopers and the Regiments of the Colonies. No Australian forces fought in the Zulu Wars but in the Boer Wars yes.
