Wondering what y'all go to when trying to read dates on coins, etc. I have a couple of low-powered magnifier lenses around the house that are of very limited use. Thinking a loup might be a good bet, but nothing like a stereo magnifier, eh?

Mornin, now I'm newish to this hobby so have only preformed your question a couple of times. But in a couple other of my hobbies I use this with great success. Cheap if ya shop, sub$20, portable, easy to use, good battery life.

Any coin shop will probably have some good loupes for sale. I use both 5X and 10X made by Bausch & Lomb. Amazon has a good choice of them too. And then when I want to really zoon in, I use a digital microscope like hollARDog.

I have a 2x 3x 5x jewelers loop.
Then a few more that have their place.
The best one is the magnifier app. on the phone.
Can pluck a sliver out no problem now.
Great out in the field as well.
Not the best example.

What's giving you fits about it? Spin a thumb wheel🤘

When i spin the wheel all it does is focus I thought you could change the magnification power

Like zoom in or zoom out

Correct me if i am wrong but isn't it supposed to be able to adjust the magnification power ?

I gotcha, now I'm not a optics person at all but the way I take it is if you are inch away and focus that's a giving power,x.
Now set the scope directly on top of the sample and focus it in, that's a higher power, x.
With what I use the scope for I use it in-between 1.5-0" away

when i bought mine i was supposed to be able to adjust the magnification power

Pull it away and focus = lower power
Place up close and focus = higher power
