Got out today with a new hunting buddy. He took me to a field he secured a mile or two away from Antietam and we went at it. A lot of the field we discovered early on was fill dirt. Once we made our way down the hill to a fence line and away from the fill I started to find a few good pieces of lead. Also managed a nice silvered flat button and a civil war era curry comb. This comb was intentionally hidden under some large rocks in a rock out cropping. When I got the signal, I was really hoping it was a hidden coin cache. I'll take the comb though, I've never found one this nice and complete. It's the exact one shown in the Civil War Artifacts book by Howard Crouch. The one in the book is said to have been found in an early CS camp.

Congratulations on an interesting piece of history. And also on having the knowledge to realize what it was. I never heard of one before.

Congrats...I've dug that area before and always cool to be there. Your button is not silvered, it is a tombac spun button made of alloy. They are mid to late 1700s.

How cool that you get to hunt that historic area!

Very nice finds, & nice job on being able to research the comb.

Very nice! I love finds like that. You don't see them very often.

Thanks everyone, it was nice to find something different like that although I really was hoping for a cache. It was definitely intentionally placed under the rocks I found it under and was in shallow soil under those. It didn't even sound off like iron, that's why I was really hoping cache with the way it was hidden.

Beautiful relics and like relic lover said, great job in knowing what you had found!

Nice curry comb..& Great spot to search even if filled ..

That comb is sweet! Nice job with the ID too.

A friend of mine has a log cabin just outside Antietam... It's one of the trashiest, back filled and graded sites I've ever swung at... but its so tempting because of where it is and what it looks like... so I usually go once a year, because it takes a year to forget how miserable it is to detect there. haha The whole drive home I'll be like "last time I ever go to that place" and then the next summer I find myself on my way back there thinking "I cant wait to swing there again" haha This past summer I dug a nice Calvary carbine bullet and then a bunch of civilian stuff.

You really know your stuff,,
Not being a Civil War hunter, I would not have had a clue.
Congrats on a nice find

Not too much of an expert, lol. I've just looked at my civil war relics books so many times that I knew what it was right away. Plus I've found part of a curry comb in the past, but not nearly as complete.
