This is yesterdays hunt. It started with Land-Mag & I doing 1 hour 15 minutes during the hottest part of the day. It turn out to be a late Aug Bank-Holiday heat record! I had 10 Roman Coins, in the picture with the Silver sixpence top right. I soon realised that this field had been deep ploughed, which must have been the first time in about 5-6 years! So we finally had a good field to settle down on.
After reporting back to Cru'dad we decided to do the last hour & 15 minutes of sunlight, so as not to over heat. We started the gridding process, as I had just scouted the better area, & ended up with another 13 Coins.8-)

23 Roman Bronze Coins - 2 good Coins, 1 nice Allectus that I need.:icon_thumright:
Blank Silver Sixpence (Counter-stamped)
Small Medieval Buckle

Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Killer finds as usual! Those romans look to be in pretty good condition.

Greatgreatgreat! I love these brownish patina coins from this field! :icon_thumleft:

Crusader, another great hunt. Question, what do you think was on the site to account for the sizable number of coins you found in such a short time. Good luck with your hunts. Walt

Crazy good condition on those Romans!! Wow

Cru, you must have one hell of a coin collection.

Great harvest. Those bronze coins seem to be in a very good shape! Never seen this brown-red patina before.

I can't get over the condition of some of those Roman bronzes from nearly 2000 years ago !! Stunning really ! Cheers .

This field is a shadow of it's former self. We had our one day record from here; 98. I was finding so many Cru'dad had no time to detect & was just doing the GPS job for me. We called it the 'Field of 500' because we had that many in our first 6 weeks on the Site.
The reason for the large number of coins from this Site that now number about 1400 (plus another 600 the Archies had) is because it was a large settlement by the River, & one theory is that it was a Military/State run grain distribution centre. They used the river as transport.

The Reddish Hue is from either natural &/or Iron in the wet sandy soil.

It always amazes me the different colours of bronze Roman coins you find Cru.
Can I assume this is due to minerals in the soil, combined with fertilizer? :icon_scratch:

Dave

PS. I just read your response to Anton's question. :laughing7:

We mostly have heavy Oxford Clay in our area. So any sandy soil like this which I think is high in iron oxides & stays deeper in wet conditions causes this affect. We only get this type of Hue in wetter areas.

Thanks for sharing your great finds!!! What kind of coin cleaning methods do you use? Are you breaking out the Andre's Pencils for Roman coins? I'm curious.

Thanks for sharing those are some amazing finds

Epic saves! Future historians will thank you.

Those Roman coins are awesome, great detail on them!

Nice way to end August

Yes, only just started to test the Andre's pencils on these most reason Roman Coins, & it works quite well.
