Above Coffee Creek. It's quite a steep hike into the site. I never found the adit, but I also didn't look to hard for it. Year: 1901

No sampling. It's all in a wilderness area now. Must have used mules to pack in equipment.

You CAN prospect in Federal Wilderness Areas. No new claims allowed without a special process but pans and sluices are allowed...just nothing mechanized so no hand dredges, high bankers, etc and nothing with wheels (carts, bicycles, etc).

The right to assess mineral potential was explicitly protected in the wilderness act.

So much history laying around in the Alps. I MUCH prefer choppers to hiking there as ungodly vertical. The Chocolate mtns are my favorites of the two as not as much scenery but more gold . I have a cool video of hovering over the USGS marker pounded into the tallest pinnacle in the Alps. A man hung out of a chopper door and was lowered to that sharp pinacle with a bronze marker and a rockhammer to post it and will amaze me till I die-John
