Sometime ago, whilst Land-Magnet & I were trolling the aerial shots for likely sites we came across the image below. :sign13: Its taken several months of negotiation on Land-magnets side but we now have an agreed & signed contract (exclusively for 'the' team [Dad, Land-magnet & I). Getting land for yourself is hard enough, getting it for others that the owner has never met is even trickier.

As all the crops are in & we will have to wait until harvest, we decided to see the lay of the land & walk the edges of the likely hotspots.

Well spot-on where we had the nice aerial (edge searching only) was a spread of Roman Pottery including - Shell-temper ware (1st C BC- 1st C AD - great sign for possible Iron Age) Grey Ware, Mortarium section, etc. Most importantly a large Roof Title - YEAH - Another Villa Site. :o :o :o

Now this is as excited as I can get without a detector in my hands - I can't wait until harvest. This place is Virgin, no chance of Night Hawkers either - too hard to get to & close to the farm buildings!

Just thought I would share :)

I have no idea why (as every other field is covered with crop) but they have left a 3-5 metre strip around the edge closest to the Villa Site. I'm hoping to go back to do this area, even if small, so as to get a taste for how many coins we are in for ;D

Some of that pottery looks like what I found the other day!

Roman! I'll have to tell the farmer that, he's the first one who's been interested in what I've found!

Probably hoping for a Saxon hoard :D

I'm going again tomorrow, if it's not too wet :-\

I think I will try a different field though and save that one till harvest because of his crops.

One can only imagine what is in a virgin Roman field :dontknow: perhaps a Roman Sigillata jug filled with gold and silver Roman coins ? Good Luck hunting Jim

Nice peices of pottery :icon_thumright:, i look forward to seeing your results when you go back :icon_thumright:

Help me out here. So what are we looking at in the first picture? Looks like a field with some type of subtle patterns (features) and I am not sure what makes that field so exciting. It it a possible meteorite scatter?

Yeap, it's the meteorite scatter effect we look for on a really great Iron Age/Roman Site :laughing9: :laughing9:

What your seeing (or not seeing) is:
Long lost field patterns which are only visible from the air - no signs on the ground. These are on a different alignment to the now existing field systems - another good sign!
From left to right is a funnel shaped entrance defined by a ditch on each side.
Then you have a number of individual enclosures which are either part of the Villa complex, or individual plots of land. Some middens or pits are evident as well.
The proof is the pottery, if you stick around until Harvest, I will show you about 200 Roman Coins to go with it, hopefully some Silver & many Fibula & artifacts to go with it
If I'm really luck, this started in the Iron Age & we will prove that as well with a Gold Stater.

That's awesome :icon_sunny: Should make some interesting finds :hello2: Have fun :icon_thumright:

I look forward to seeing your finds, looks and sounds promising.
