Then I had to recruit the troop.IMG_1212.webp

Your kids will not forget this ever. The next generation of artifact hunters:thumbsup:

Thats pretty cool Sheperdess,
Congrats on that skull, one of the coolest thing I've seen on here for a while.
Keep Diggin...
Steve

Very Nice!!! Looks like you had some good help too!

Were there anything else of the critter in the bank, or as most often the case was there only the skull?

It's nice that you have a pair now too. Thanks for sharing with us all.

Nice digging Sheperdess & family!

Doesn't get much more iconic or emblematic of Plains life than that.

This one, Joel, only had the skull, but the other one the girls said that there were more bones there. I however did not get down the creek to check it out. Now that spot is covered with a very large pile of trash from a flood.

Nice find. So how old do you think it is?

Nothing like having a family dig! :icon_thumright: I also find it rewarding when I find an old buffalo skull. Thank for sharing, that looks like fun.

Oh, you may want to apply a water sealer (Thomson's ?) to inhibit and moisture and the air from deteriorating the bone. Just a suggestion.

Well I ran over and took a few photos of the teeth. Maybe they can help on the age of this beast. This one side is drastically worn down and polished!

Thank you Dennis, for the wax sealer idea. The Archy told me when we found the first skull, to take a large tub and dilute Elmers glue and water ( half & half ) and soak the skull in it for about a week. This therefore seals the inside as well as the outside. The inside will continue to decompose if only the outside is treated. It would take a lot of Elmers to do this. The bone on this second skull is in rather tough shape. I will leave them in the old house where the temperature will not be too drastic.

Good idea! :icon_thumright: Our air is a lot dryer out here in the west, and if you keep it out of the rain and sunlight it will last better.
Good Luck!

You would think you could get some type of spray sealer or even brush something on it to preserve it.

What great memories! I'm glad you and the kids got to do that. Nice!

Here is another preservative option:

Thank you 11KBP. That has some good information on it.

IT was a good thing that we got it dug out as we got 1 and a half inches of rain yesterday and the creek is certainly running now!

Thanks everyone for looking~!
