Hit some colonial woods today, its only my 2nd time out with the Explorer I bought last year and my first time out in months. Its my second Explorer but I didnt get to put in much time with my previous one so im still getting use to them. Anyway it was 15 with the wind chill so alittle chilly. I went out for about an hour and a half and managed a V nickle (still needs cleaning) and a silver thimble, and a pocket watch key? The woods im hunting were a farm in the late 1600's and through the 1700's. I've pulled a few king George 2 pennies and half pennies as well as some newer coins (well 19th century new) last time out I pulled an Indian and 1899 Barber Quarter. Id much rather have the colonial coins but i'll settle for 19th century American, ;D. I do love detecting in the winter though, no crowds, the soil in the woods is still as easy to dig in as potting soil, no brush....

Nice thimble.

Yes its a watch winder.

Thanks, I thought so, its the 2nd one I found but I had no idea what they were till I seen on posted. The thimble has a 7 on it, Im guessing its for size, I wish there was a way to date it. The finds at this site range from early 1700's to into the 20th century so its hard. Anyone know a quick and effectiveway to clean the nickle? Some of the cruds flaking off. Im not concerned with value I just want to clean it up and get a date.

Congrats Jimmie, 3 finds like that are a successful hunt and as far as thimble dating goes, look at this website, save it as a favorite and basically the pattern will rough date the thimble for you. I suspect yours is 19th century.

I had thoughts of going out today, with deer season all next week wiping out any chance of hunting, but no hurry, I will wait for a nicer less windy and chilly day! :D

Nice job on the thimble, it's much nicer than any I've ever dug. Sounds like your making some nice finds there. I've never dug any colonial finds here in OH, so I don't know what I've been missing. I'm happy digging mercs and Barbers and thrilled to dig seated or bust coins.

Thanks Don, thats what I was thinking, in my experience 18th century items like coins and buttons and thimbles are not as perfect in shape and design as the machine made stuff of the 19th century. Im trying to figure out the exact location were this house stood, I still cant find any signs of it even though it appears in a mid 1700's map I seen. What do you usually look for? I dont see any surface signs such as a cellar hole or any glass or pottery shards.

You guys should have a fair amount of French and Indian war sites in Ohio? I wish we had some of those sites here, Im still trying to find one of my main goals which is a British military button from the 1700's but i'd settle for a belt plate or silver gorget. ;D

Killer Thimble! I like the watch winder key too.

Nice finds,

Yes, here in pittsburgh where I am at the woods are the place to be. Soft rich black soil in the woods. I love no crowds and the full pleasure of getting into any area I couldn't get into in the summer. Yes the temps have been real cold. I was out over the weekend. As long as your moving your O.K.

Ya as long as im moving around detecting in the colds never been an issue, as long as your dressed right i've been out detecting in below zero temps. When I started detecting the woods I didn't have my license yet so I had to ride my bike a few miles which wasnt too bad...till the ride home unless I found something then it was an exciting ride home. ;D I still mountain bike back into the sites but now its only from my car.

I love the thimble congrats!

Very nice finds and site! If you don't know your Explorer very well then prepare yourself, LOL, it is a very good machine. HH, Mike
