I've been hitting a Goodwill that's close to my work during my lunch hour, just a 5 minute drive.
Just enough time to get there, zip through all the aisles, and pray that there's no line at the cashiers.
This last visit I had to call work to tell them I'd be a little longer than planned. But it was worth it.
There are set areas in the store that I tend to focus on, and other spots that get just a cursory glance.
You know what I'm talking about,
If your not interested in clothes, you don't tend to go in that area.
So I was just finishing up my route heading to the exit, when I glanced above where they keep all the woman's purses.
They had put a shelving, and there were seven framed maps, all in a row. I know little if nothing about maps, not
having dealt with them before, but these were so nicely framed I knew I had to examine them further.
Two had certificates of authenticity, and had been framed with conservation glass. That's all I needed to know.
Except for one, they all dealt with the progression of the creation of Texas.
The other is a 1750 map of Jerusalem.
The Texans are dated from 1830-1873. This Goodwill has really nice people working there,
so after taking two trips to the front of the store,
I asked to speak to the manager.
When she arrived, I explained that I'd love to purchase the group, and was there any chance
for a discount. She said no problem, and cut the price more than half!
I would have paid the full amount in a second, but it never hurts to ask.
Long story short, got home and emailed the owner of the store that was on the back of two of the maps.
He quickly responded that he had sold those maps about 15 years ago, and were genuine.
Yeah baby!
Spent a few more hours, and all seem to be legit, but I will have to bring a couple in to a local rare map shop here in Denver.
Best lunch date ever!
Sorry about the rambling on, but these type of days just don't happen to me.
Only thing that would have made this better would have been
if they were pertaining to Colorado, but now I have no qualms about Flebaying them.
Thanks for viewing,
Carl
I did decide to go back the next day for the one map I didn't grab, and of course it was history.
