Went to my favorite park today for 1 hour with the Whites V3i . Got a solid signal tone 75-85 on the VDI showed green freq and 9" on the pinpoint. Dug down 10" nothing but did get a hit on the pinpointer in the center of the hole. Dug down about 3" and out pops this. At first I thought it was a token but then I saw the date of 1806, you don't find things from 1806 in Spokane,Wa. It is a 1806 George the 3rd Half penny. Oldest coin I ever found in Spokane. Took some pictures before and after I wet toothbrushes it. It's soaking in mineral oil now. Any tips how to clean it? Should I?
Thanks for looking MackDOg

Wow, that could have been left there by some of the first white settlers in the area in the early 1800s! Great find! A trading post was established in Spokane in 1810, according to wikipedia

Nice find, here are a couple relatively safe methods on coins like this where there is not much to lose, insofar as it is already pretty trashed.

Mechanical Cleaning of Coins

Wow - that is early for your area - awesome find!

I am not a pro at cleaning but be carful cleaning. Great find by the way ( :

Fantastic 1806 half penny find "CONGRATS" and thanks for sharing your pictures and story with us and I wish you many more great finds while out dirt fishing.

Sweet find MD. I'd be careful with that coin, maybe just warm soapy water and a soft toothbrush, I'd be afraid of loosing what detail is remaining by using any other method.

Great old copper find. I just lightly water and toothbrush mine then soak them in olive oil for a week or two. It will bring back some detail. Just dont scrub to hard when you are tooth brushing it.

Congrats on the KG.

I bet you were shaking your head when you figured out what it was.

That's good news for the spokane area! I won't ask for your exact spot but where the heck did ya find that in this town?

Definitely a rare find in your area. Congrats!

Looks good as is. Peroxide method at most but I certainly wouldn't mechanically clean it or tumble it or you'll be left with an unrecognizable lump!

Best wishes,

Buck

Excellent find. From my limited experience, less is more. On you tube there is an informative video by aquachigger. Many of the methods that are out there make a good coin less appealing than not doing anything at all.
